Wolverine Swimming Records Come Up For AAU Approval By DON WIRTCHAFTER J The high moguls of the Amateurl Athletic Union of the United States set out for Hollywood Beach, Fla. today to spend the weekend talking about rules and regulations, athletes and athletics, laws and by-laws, trials and tribulations, metres and yards, and finally the University of Michigan and some other -schools throughout the country. The occasion is the fifty-first an-k nual gathering of the AAU, and more than 400 of the moguls representing every section of the nation will at- tend. Michigan Marks Considered They're bound to do some talking about the Wolverine athletes during the three-day convention since six Michigan swimming relay marks are up before the committee for the okay that is necessary to bind them in the book of American records. Besides this, Jim Skinner, the phenomenal freshman, is applying for recognition of his 1:02.1 per- formance in the 100-yard short course breast stroke race in New Haven a year ago, and also his 220 time of 2:46.6 in winning the out- troit Boat Club tank last August. door AAU event at the 25-yard De- The local lad ought to have no trouble getting the nod on his 220- yard splashing, but since Dick Hough, the Princeton powerhouse bettered his century mark by doing 1:00.6 the following April, it seems quite doubt- ful that Skinner's efforts over this distance will remain in the books. Apply For Six Relay Records As far as the relays are concerned, the Wolverine teams are applying for two records in the 20-yard pool and four marks that they blasted over the 25-yard course. Last February in the Michigan pool, Walt Tomski, Charley Barker, Tom Haynie, Gus Sharemet and Bill Holmes teamed up to churn the 500- yard distance in 4:26.1 and four days later John Haigh, John Sharemet, Tommy Williams and Tom Haynie swam the 800-yard breast stroke race in 10:11.1. The recognition of the performance is doubtful, how- ever, since an Ohio State quartet did 10:08.6 the following week. The long course marks were all turned in during the Wolverine field day at Iowa City last February. Matt Mann set his squad out to crack the 600-yard relay record and be- fore it was all over, the 400 and 500- yard marks also went down. Holmes, Ed Hutchens, Barker, Tomski, Jim Welsh and Bill Beebe were the free stylers that took part in this coup. One other American record hit the rocks that same day when Beebe, Haigh and Holmes churned the 300- yard medley in 3:4.6. Aside from these applications for American swimming marks, the list of the Wolverines' requests for note- worthy performance recognitions is almost as long as today's D.O.B. -®- oodfellows-Monday - Illini Take Double-Header CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Dec. 6.-(IP)- Illinois started off slowly in both ends of a double-header basketball opener tonight, but gained momentum for easy victories over Monmouth College,) 37 to 19, and Wabash College, 60 to 21. A crowd of 4,346 watched the games. Coach Lowrey Predicts Hard GameSaturday Baptists Present Veteran Squad; Calvert And Ross MayF PlayFull Game Eddie Lowrey, Michigan hockey coach, is smiling these days in spitel of the fact that his boys are scheduled1 to meet a very strong puck squad from McMaster University at the Michigan rink in about three days. "They may beat us," says Eddie, "but they'll know they've been in a game. Our squad is green but they're learning every day. Why, we've got Several boys out here who never played hockey before in their lives. Under the circumstances, I think they made a very good showing against London last Saturday." Corson Shows Promise Coach Lowrey is especially pleased with the work of Johnny Corson, sophomore right wing. He has plenty of fight and with a little experience, the coach expects him to be an im- portant cog in his second line. In last Saturday's contest with the London (Ont.) A.C., in which the Wolverines were nosed out in the last 10 minutes by a score of 3-1, the Michigan mentor substituted freely in his second line. It now appears that this forward wall will be composed of Corson, Gil Samuelson and Bill Canfield or Cliff Dance. McMaster U. Favored For McMaster University, Michi- gan's next opponent, the coach has nothing but praise. "They play a hard, rough brand of hockey but they are good clean players and al- ways fine sportsmen. It's thedkind of a team we like to have on our schedule." The Canadians lost to the Wolver- ines last year but it seems likely that the situation may be reversed next Saturday. The Baptists were not as hard-hit by graduation as was Mich- igan and they will be favored to win. The Wolverine iron men, Larry Cal- vert and Charlie Ross, who both played 60 minutes at the defense posts against London, wlil probably go the route again against XeMas- ter, but Lowrey may try moving Burt Stodden back from the front line later in the season, if he can find a suitable substitute for the diminu- tive wing. The Lawyers and Spares, however, are not to be counted out, having won 16 and lost 11. In the Resident Hall's Bowling League the Allen-Rumsey House leads the pinmen with the Michigan House close by. Opposing teams for two other bowl games have been selected, but the oldest of the New Year's classics, the Rose Bowl at Pasadena, remained a question mark pending the outcome of Saturday's tussle between South-, ern California and U.C.L.A.
