Since trouser bottoms seem to have been raised one or two inches gener- ally and colors and patterns in hosiery have been stepped up, shoes must now be selected with a great deal more care, so that they jibe. Thus differ- eiit outfits now require different col ors and styles in shoes, Always smart for ordinary town wear is the popular brogue styled shoe. Appearing in black, various shades of brown and tan, this shoe ,is first in the wardrobes of college men. New Stitching Shown New stitchings and features are found this year in this shoe which is built along heavy lines. Popular here is the blucher type, having a capped tip with side pieces extending beyond the lacing. They can be bought in straight or wing tip toe styles and in various leathers. The Norwegian shoe, usually found in browns, has received a good play this year and is worn on sports occa- sions. It completes a tweed country outfit handsomely. Stitching on the toe of this model is done in a half oval. For formal wear we find the old standbys still in vogue. Either patent leather or dull-finished leather is worn.r Novelties are in super-abundance this season, and it is here that gift prospects are best. New ideas range from beach shoes to the much dis- cussed chukkas and winter sports boots.7 Chukkas Coming In Chukkas are catching hold on cam- pus no t among a few hardy souls. This new type seems to be a com- promise between old-fashioned high- tops and oxfords. They reach the ankle, and usually are found in un- finished leathers A holdover from last season is the side laced peasant type shoe, favored most in a natural pigskin color. Al- though strictly a sports shoe, soles hee are in leather. Novel fashion quirks are sfound in okford types sporting monk fronts and extended tongue flaps. The monk front is, of course, the buckle fastened type. For after skiing, the young man may wear the new sheepskin lined slide fastener boots, having practical- ly no heels at all. Or if he is lazy, he may lounge about in any one of the many styles of mocassin. Or he nf sport bright-colored pile slip- pers, very warm even though a trifle obvious. The man fortunate enough to go south for the winter will appre- ciate the inclusion of a sprightly pair of beach sandals in his Christmas stocking. They come in wood soles or rubber. Clothes Named Most Desirable Gifts For Men (Continued from Page 13)1 SLIPPERS ." r . _: Shirts Are Poteinial Presents For Roommate, Pal, Or Father ..E te aic~e q 1 By J. BASCOM SLINK With Christmas just around the corner, men's shirts assume a new role-that of the potential Christ- mas gift for room-mate, father, bro- ther, pal or boy-friend-note well, ladies. Colors, patterns, materials and styles come in for, greater at- tention than ever at this time of year, and they are often the sub- ject of considerable thought, and equally often the subject of con- siderable lack of thought. The first point to consider in pick- ing out a gift-shirt is not color, style, material or pattern. Size is all-important. No man likes to re- turn a gift, and size 14 collars don't do very well on size 16 necks. Doting aunts and sisters might do well to remember that. Wide Material Variety *This year the shirt has blossomed forth in a wide variety of interest- ing styles and materials. The French cuff-long a'n old reliable-seems to be returning to favor, and with it are coming the cuff links. Button- down collars are maintaining their old place of popularity, especially on colored shirts intended for sports wear. And the tab collar is staging an uphill fight for new recognition. Soft brushed cottons and wools, for all-around and outdoor wear re- spectively, are the most outstanding of the materials . These are not only comfortable and stylish, but they are made up in materials which are beautifully patterned and cut along the latest lines. The plain white shirt, in Oxford cloth, is one number on which it is difficult to go wrong. White is the all-purpose color in the shirt field, as good for sports wear as for church attendance. It can be worn with any color or shade of ties or coat or complexion or hair. In short, one will hardly ever go wrong giving a white shirt or wearing one. Herringbone Striking The most outstanding of the col- ored shirts are the numbers cut from a herringbone or diagonal stripe fab- ric, usually a light, almost pastel shade mixed in with white. Button- down collars seem to be dominant on these shirts, and they are certain to prove very popular. Darker and brighter colors seems to be the rule for the brushed wool shirts for outdoor wear. Not quite as dark as the popular numbers of a few years ago, these shirts are in- jecting some heaven-sent greeds, blues, and browns into men's ward- robes. But steer clear of these un- less the prospective recipient of your Christmas gift is the pipe-smoking, out-of-doors type, gals. The white-on-white patterned ma- terials, seem destined for consider- able popularity this winter, giving. vent to a man's desire for a little life in his more conservative shirts for church-going. While on the subject of shirts, it might not be amiss to call atten- tion to the new cuff links, ,since French cuffs are here.' Colors of stones are lighter in the metal links, making them more attractive. But the prize of all prizes among cuff links is the leather-covered. Avail- able in a variety of shapes, this num- ber is attractive, destined for popu- larity and the answer to a demand for something new in the field of the one-piece link. a il Supplant Tux At Virtually Every Function (Continued from Page 14) 14 karat gold plate. Monogrammed links, in keeping with the vogue in this direction, are also enjoying a certain popularity. The bat-wing tie, in both black and white, is still as popular as ever although it has become largely sup- planted in recent seasons' by the classier pointed type. Socks for for- mal wear should-"be ultra-conserva- tive, being of plain black silk lack- ing even the ostentation of a clock. The single-breasted, fly-front, midnight blue Chesterfield is the most popular top coat for evening wear although all types of Chester- fields are in perfect style. Red and white carnations, either real or artir ficial, are also in perfect order for evening dress as are white handker- chiefs. In answer to the long dis- cussed question of whether it is pro- per or not to wear both handkerchief and flower, certain noted New York tailors have declared that one can do as they choose for both are per- fectly correct. Patent leather shoes have also in- creased in popularity over former years although plain black shoes are still acceptable for all occasions. Chapeaux have also changed little since last year with the flexible opera Sat still being the most stylish piece of headgear for formal wear. The derby has become outmoded and has been replaced by .the midnight blue and black homburg. In recent weeks the black Lord's hat has also ap- peared on numerous occasions.
