Dragged in the cab of their truck for 250 feet, two Louisville, Ky.,
men narrowly escaped death under a locomotive. Miraculously, one of
the men suffered only minor cuts and bruises and the other was unhurt.
The two were hauling coal and failed to see or hear the approaching
locomotive.

Patrolman Alvin Dooley (left), of the Long Beach, N.Y., police force,
is seen here shaking hands with Mayor Louis F. Edwards (right) at a
recent Patrolmen's Benevolent Association meeting. Now Dooley is
being held on a homicide charge, accused of fatally shooting Mayor
Edwards and critically injuring his bodyguard, Police Sergeant James
Walsh. Long Beach is a seaside resort on the south shore of Long Island.

This light tank of the 66th Infantry from Fort Meade, Md., started over a stump barricade
maneuvers at Fort Belvoir, Va., and stuck right at the peak, giving engineers an unexpected p
in how to pull it off. The stumps were sunk to a depth of about five feet on a zig-zag pattern.

Volunteer workers searched Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, for the bodies of 500 to 80 persons estimated
to have died in a fire that swept the oil town of Laguinallas, a village of wooden shacks perched on stilts at
the water's edge. Only charred piling and floating debris remained of the shanty town, a view of which
is shown here.

The British War Office official caption says this is the first picture
taken of the two Allied commanders-in-chief together since the out-
break of the war. Left, Viscount Gort, head of the British Expedition-
ary Force, and right, General Gaknelin, of the French army, who J$ in
supremne comimand of the Allied land forces.

When this photo was made of Eileen Herrick and George Lowther,
3rd, socialites, in a New York night club recently, life and love moved
along like a song. Then, Lowther charges, her parents kept her from
seeing him against her will. So Lowther, sometimes called New York's
most eligible bachelor, asked the supreme court for a writ of habeas
corpus-and was granted it.

London's air raid precautions experts, functioning for nearly two and a half months of war-without op-
portunity to show their skill, staged a "German" air raid of their own Nov. 8 and shot down a "Nazi" plane
right in the middle of the street. The dummy can be seen burning while "dead and dying" await the end
of the show.
