THE MICHIGAN DAILY -ay Colors Dominate Fashions On Campus 0 ! College Man Issues Ultimatum In War On Women's Fashions By JOE COLLEGE So they're going back to the hour glass figure! Fashion is indeed spinach, but what else can one ex- pect from the incomprehensible logic of the feminine mind. For years the fairer sex has endured seven kinds of torture to achieve the girlish figure until the "femme fatale" looked like something by Petty. But now fashion decrees wasp- waists and wasp-waists it is. Ah well, perhaps they won't catch. Thank God, hoops didn't. On the other hand, women can be very practical indeed, as witness the babushka, which is probably the best use bandannas have been put to ex- cept for those interesting beach halt- ers. Sweaters?-But, Definitely! They say sweaters are comfortable too. At least they look comfortable, so we'll give them a vote, reserving opinion on angoras to avoid censor- ship. In England the younger set is nuts about hiking and maybe we'll soon be able to take up this sport without too much bother. For what could be handier than to pack a lunch in one of those simply divine knapsacks with long straps that some enter- prising soul put on the market as purse wear? Shoes leap from one extreme to the other. Bits of two by fours fastened to the foot with leather straps, and presto-you have sandals. Or the old stand-by, saddle shoes, a steal from men. Of course, the toeless slipper hangs on, and heaven only knows how! The Pedant Speaks Some learned pedant once re- marked that improper footwear af- fected the eyesight but he didn't say why faulty shoes made women wear those pince-nez on a chain. A man probably invented those, too. The ideal Michigan girl, according to an informal canvass conducted by the SPCA, should have in her ward- robe at least two dirndls, preferably with large wide stripes of orange and black; four hats, designed to make the face appear long and haggard, in keeping with Michigan tradition; six pounds of assorted junk to be used at random for decorative purposes; a raincoat, either green or purple; a pair of rubber boots, size 10; three kinds of glamour paint, one each for morning, afternoon and evening; and finally, the clothes that one would wear at home. The college woman's peren- nial cry for simplicity has been answered in full by the designers of our clothes. Even date dresses are cut on the most simple lines possible and are made in brilliant hues. Although the more prominent Paris stylists are showing all sorts of draped, shirred and bustled models, the modern co-ed still clings to the little girl simplicity that has. long been close to her heart. Smocking, too, is one of the season's latest touches for the collegiate date-dress and embodies all the youthful spirit of its wearer. 'Sloppy-Joe' Styles Popular The nation-wide campus outfit, the sweater, skirt and suit team, has such a multitude of variations this season that the possibilitie sare end- less. Cardigan and slip-over sweat- ers in the "sloppy-joe" styles are the most easily cared for and most casual sort that we all adore. Cardigans with plaid ribbon trim to match your pet skirt are a novelty of the season that have caught hold rapidly. Soft cashmere that incor- porates the tones in a strictly tailored tweed suit makes the ideal costume for classes and football games. And speaking of tweeds, it might be well to get an angora sweater made of a tweedy looking yarn with all the colors of your suit in it. Plaids Are Prominent This matter of plaids has been constantly before our eyes for the past few weeks and deserves careful attention as they are very definitely the best thing of the season. A plaid suit that incorporates most of the colors of your wardrobe will be a heaven-sent blessing to every woman this year. When mixed with plain flannel skirts or jacets, several dis- tinct different costumes that Will be a help to the budget. The eastern colleges started a craze for bright flannel shirts with severely man-tailored lines last year that promises to gan great popular- ity here. When worn with either plaid skirts or plain flannel they are the most comfortable apparel for long hours in the library. Fireman red or yellow make a stunning match for your, red, blue and yellow plaid skirt. Jersey Shirts Are Favored Printed shirts of baby soft jersey make a good match to wear with a dark town suit of herring-bone weave and if you are the sort of person who loves to change into slacks for evenings in the dorm there could be nothing better. Under many of the simpler slipover sweaters and under cardigans there is nothing that makes one feel better than a crisp white skirt. It has become quite a custom here at Michigan. There are two new trends in suits for this fall and winter. First the skirt sare very full, a bit shorter and definitely flared while their jackets have grown, longer to harmonize with Ji the added length of your cardigans. For a tailored suit there could be nothing better than a soft wool herr- ing-bone skirt with a collarless jacket of a contrasting color bound in the color of the skirt. The snug high neck-line of the jacket makes it adap- table for both sweaters and ascot scarves or even with a chunky strand of pearls. Pin Stripes Are New Pin stripe sare another adaptable weave in flannels this year and may be obtained in two piece dresses so that the flared skirt with a narrow leather belt may be worn with plain flannel shirts of a different hue. Little girl jumpers are new and smart and are at their best under casual sports coats. Suits of sea-green or teal blue corduroy are a boon for these semi- cool fall days when its always a prob- Suede Jerkins Popular nor too cool.
