THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE E Star Goal Tender the squad will be Bert Stodden, an Ann Arbor, boy whom injuries kept on the sidelines most of last year, Jim Tobin, Jim Lovett, Chuck Ross, Gil Samuelson and Fred Heddle. Juniors who will ue Dack have had less experience. Bert Stodden, who was out with an injury most of last year, will return, as will Larry Cal- vert, Jim Tobin, Jim Lovett, Chuck Ross, Gil Samuelson and Fred Heddle. But it is the freshman squad which is the main hope of Coach Eddie Low- rey. "This outfit is one hundred per cent better than last year's fresh- man squad," he says, "and our hopes this coming year depend on these boys." Freshman Squad Paul Goldsmith, a center, and Bob Collins, defensemen, are the out- standing performers on this squad. Goldsmith is fast and rangey, and his height and reach make him an ex- cellent poke-checker. In addition he is a good stick handler and boasts the hardest shot on the team, need- ing only a little seasoning to become a top player. Collins, the most aggressive man on the squad, has spent considerable time working on the front line to im- prove his skating. He has had two years of organized hockey. Cliff Dance, a wing, improved rapidly last year, while two Canadians also have been outstanding. They are Ardin Boland of North Bay, and Alex Stan- yer, a hard body check player, who has had experience in the Lower Ot- tawa Valley League. Fitch Tillotson, Dick Taylor, John Golf TourneyBeckons Stude Golfing enthusiasts enrolled at the University of Michigan will have a chance to match shots with other students again this year in the annual Trueblood Trophy Contest, equiva- lent to an all-campus medal play golf championship. The event, which will be held sometime in the fall, is a 72-hole affair and is open to any under- graduate on the campus except win- Corson, Chester Witters, all wings, and defensemen Bill Hurley and Warren King will be back. Only two othre teams in the Big Ten .have hockey teams, Minnesota and Illinons. The Gophers swept n four-game series from the Wolverines last year to take the Conference title. Michigan took the green Illini team to place second. Most of the team's competition is with these two teams, Michigan Tech of Houghton, and school and amateur teams from On- tario. ners of Varsity golf letters and past winners of the trophy. The tourney will be played on two successive weekends with 18 holes the first Saturday, 18 the next day and 36 the following weekend. The trophy is donated by Profes- sor-Emeritus Thomas C. Trueblood, former golf coach and head of the Speech Department of the University, which he organized in 1884. In 1901, he fostered the first golf team in the Big Ten and it was largely through his efforts that other schools followed suit. Because of this-work, he is called "the father of collegiate' golf in the west." The purpose of the tournament other than providing fun, recreation and competition for the students, is to determine what new material i available for the freshmen and Va' sity squads each year. In addition;- the showings made will carry some- weight in determining what men will make the southern trip next spring vacation, Spike James, hockey captain, possibly will not be back at the nets for the Wolverines this year since he is eligible for service in the Canadian army. players he stands to lose only a few of regulars through Canada's call to the colors. His greatest loss would be in the person of Capt. Eldon "Spike" James who has guarded the Wolverine nets through the last two seasons. Larry Calvert is the only other Canadian on the squad. Larry made his debut at one of the defense posts last year, and the progress he made during the season marked him a valuable asset to the club should he return.
