EVANSTON, Ill., Oct. 7. -(N-
Oklahoma's Sooners, the boss team
of the Big Six Conference last year,
did everything right today to fashion
a staggering,23 to-0 upset over North-
western, in spite of some brilliant
operations by Bill De Correvont.
The biggest opening day turnout
in Northwestern's gridiron history,
45,000 spectators, came to see how
De Correvont, the nation's most pub-
licized prep school star two years
ago, would do against the big boys.
They saw the blond youngster stage
a brilliant performance after an un-
happy start but nothing De Correvont
could do was anywhere near enough
to offset Northwestern's 'mistakes.
The Oklahomans, underdogs in
spite of their sensation record of 10,
straight victories last year before
losing to Tennessee in the Orange
Bowl, were prompt to take advantage
of errors. They clamped a strang-
ling defense on Northwestern's high-
iy regarded crew of backs, and pro-
duced stunning offensive power when
scoring opportunities arose.
De Correvont went into -action late
in the first period and lost 13 yards
on two plays as the Sooner forwards
crashed through Northwestern's line.
He came back late in the third period
to return a kickoff 40 yards, race
13 yards around an end, and give a
dazzling exhibition of footwork in
slipping through the right side of the
Aklahoma line for a 28 yard gain.
A fumble nullified his gains.

' LINCOLN, Neb., Oct. 7.-AP)-Ne-
braska, dripping with raw power,
relied today on a surprise play and
a misdirected block by Minnesota's1
captain to tarnish the Golden Go-
phers, 6 to 0.

yards to the 3-yard line on a revere
midway in the second period of 4.

self surrounded by a horde of Minne-
sotans. An attempted block sailed
the substitute halfback into the end

All afternoon a trio of Nebraska
backs rammed and rambled through
and around a flabby Minnesota line
that was as mild as the weather-
and it was such none of the 33,00
spectators needed a top coat.
First it was Hermie Rohrig, then
it was Harry (Hoppity) Hopp and
late in the game Henry Rohn who
knifed through the team which last
week crushed Arizona, 62 to 0.
And it was this Nebraska regular-
ity of depending almost entirely on
one ball carrier in each set of backs
that brought Minnesota's downfall.
IOWA CITY, Ia., Oct. 7. -NP)--
Iowa's Hawkeyes roared back in the
last quarter with two thrill-packed
rallies here today to clip the wings
of Indiana's aerial sharpshooters, 32
to 29, in a wild, free-for-all scor-
ing battle that kept approximately
20,000 fans in continuous suspense.

It was the first Western Confer-]
ence triumph for Iowa at home since
October, 1933.
The Hawkeyes, behind 20 to 29 go-
ing into the fourth period, pulled
into a 26 to 29 count by marching
73 yards for a touchdown, then fol-
lowed' through with only four min-
utes left to play with a stunning
game-winning touchdown pass from
Nile Kinnick to Capt. Erwin Prasse.
SOUTH BEND, Ind., Oct. 7.-IP)-
The fighting Irish of Notre Dame,
squelching a desperate last quarter
rally, squeezed out a 17 to 14 victory
today over an underrated Georgia
Tech eleven in a brilliant offensive
battle before 33,000 spectators.
The inspired Southerners scored
the first touchdown and the last,'
but in between the Irish drove to
their two scores and a first period
field goal, which gave them a hard-
earned decision.
Tech came to life in the final
period with the score standing 7-17
against them, the attack being paced
by little Johnn Bosch. After Roy
Goree had recovered Ben ,Sheridan's
fumble on Tech's 34, Bosch passed
and ran the'invaders down to Notre
Dame's 13 yard line where Tech got
a first down.
Navy Defeats Virginia
ANNAPOLIS, Md., Oct. 7.-(IP)-
Navy's big eleven got the scare of its
life today from a game Virginia out-
fit with a "never-say-die" spirit, but
sup'erior reserves gave the Midship-,
men a hard fought 14 to 12 victory
before a crowd of 22,000.

M2ADISION, Wis., Oct. 7.-(iP)-A
hard charging Texas University foot-
ball team which took advantage of
every opening handed the Wisconsin
Badgers a stunning 17 to 7 defeat
before a crowd of 25,000 here today.
After a scoreless first half the
Texas Longhorns smashed through
the jittery Badgers for a pair of
touchdowns and a safety in the third
period to take a 15 to 0 lead. They
added two points on another safety in
the final quarter. Wisconsin scored
three minutes before the game ended.
The Longhorns dominated the play
except for brief periods in the first
and final quarters.
A substitute fullback, R. B. Patrick.
was the spearhead of the Texas third
quarter drive. He ripped through the
Wisconsin line for 21 yards on five
smashes after Gilly Davis, substi-
tute halfback, intercepted a Wiscon-
sin pass in midfield and ran 25
yards. Davis went over from the
three yard line. The conversion kick
was blocked..
