Really that's by far the best thing you have done up until now. Keep it up, old boy. Sincerely, An Admirer * * * Dear Don: Why don't you trade positions with Esther Osser? Yours truly, A Sports Fan We always appreciate hearing from our friends. All day we have been thinking of things we could say in D. W.'s "Cabbages and Kings," which will probably appear on page 5 of next year's Daily. From Chicago yesterday came the official results of the 40th annual Western Conference outdoor track festivities held in Evanston last weekend. They were released after the judges gathered around the pho- to finish pictures that were taken. And Michigan's great senior sprint star, Al Smith, will have to be con- tent with his first and second, the judges now say. In the century, they pointed out that the pictures clear- ly showed Piker cracking the tape with inches to spare. But the 220 should have been a tie, so says the release. The photos never produced a closer finish, but with a stroke of gen- erosity the judges called Smith the winner. "In light of the two close races, there will be no change in the first place deci- sions," they said. In fact there was only one change announced on the whole weekend program. Hammond of Ohio State was given the fourth spot in the 100-yard dash instead of Davenport. This means that the Buckeye sprint- er will be the fourth man on the Big Ten dash relay corps replacing the lad from Chicago. Instead of fourth, Davenport finished eighth and last. * * * Chalk up points for Michigan in the javelin events a few years hence. Reporting for summer school this June will be a lad from Lake Forest Academy who has been tossing the spear around 200 feet all year. He'll be back here come September too as a freshman . . . Pete Wege, by name . Joe Batistse, the sensational Tuscon hurdler, will definitely do his running in other parts. His grades were not good enough to warrant admittance here . . . Roy Schwarz- kopf, now in training at Seton Hall in the East, will be at Michigan in the fall. A consistent 4:25 miler, the second Schwarzkopf likes cross coun- try trotting and will probably turn into a two-miler in college . . . He'll room with his brother next year ,. . in all probability. TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY WANTED . . . a ghost writer or some humor magazines. I'm running out of material. I spent six hours and used 13 magazines up writing today's "These Fool- ish Things." THE MAD HATTER COLLEGE BASEBALL batting order. His batting record was somewhat short of the .300 mark, but Bill still managed to lead the team in runs batted in, runs scored, and extra base hits, besides fielding his position brilliantly. Steppon, to his own admission, "would rather play ball than eat" and should prove a capable and inspiring leader. Tobin, too, impressed his coach from his first workouts as a fresh- man, and lived up to his promise in his sophomore year. Starting in the fifth singles slot, Jim worked his way up to where he was alternating be- tween first and second singles posi- 13 Trackmen To Compete In AAU Meet ti rr rr b Z e: P h 12 a 'C h s a a t 0 I- t F s J tions in his first year as a Varsity nember. In the Conference championship natches that year, Tobin won the number-two singles title and played a big part in Michigan's finishing third. This spring even bigger things were expected of Jim as he refrained from playing hockey, a sport in which he had already earned a letter, to get in top shape for tennis. But fate stepped in and dealt him a stiff jolt when he incurred a torn' cartilage in his knee. Despite this1 handicap, Tobin hobbled around all spring playing when he was able, but always turning in a capable perform- ance. Jim didn't successfully retain his title last week at Evanston, but it was only after three long deuce sets that he went down in the semi-finals to Gorenstein of Wisconsin. In his first year at Highland Park High, Jim won the Detroit City Highl School Singles championship. The same summer, he also won the City Junior title, all this happening when he was but 15 years old. He success- fully defended these titles for'? two years and was soon recognized as one of the outstanding netters in Detroit. Many other championships have fallen Tobin's way, but you would never know it, if his quiet, unassum- ing, likeable attitude is any sort of criterion. At the present time, the new Wol- verine tennis captain is also presi- dent of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, member of Michigamua, Sphinx and several other campus honor societies. RIDE.. . Alan isj also entered in the 100-yard dash where he will meet a serious threatr in the person of Gerritt Stuckkie, of Western State. Both can do 9.7. Warren Breidenbach will have a busy day running the two sprint events as well as running the anchor leg on the relay team. Warren has stepped the 220-yard distance in 22 seconds during 'practice this year1 but expects to improve this mark today. Leutritz To Double1 Jack Leutritz will double in the 440 and as the third man on the mile relay team. Jack is conceded an excellent chance of winning the 440-yard run since his teammate, Breidenbach, is not entered in that event. In the mile run, Bill Ackerman will find plenty of competition when he meets Tom Quinn of Michigan Normal and Roy Fehr of Michigan State. Quinn and Fehr are co-holders of the state title for the mile event with a time of 4:14.3.) The varsity mile relay team, com- posed of Phil Balyeat, Bill Dobson, Leutritz and Breidenbach, is one of the best in the state and should have no trouble in winning. Dave Cushing in the pole vault and Tom Lawton in the shot put are the other two varsity men en- tered in the meet. Both meet strong -competition, but should finish among the leaders. Watson Unattached Big Bill Watson, captain of the track team a year ago, is entered unattached. Bill will enter six events to test his fitness for the National Decathlon to be staged in Cleveland on June 15 and 16. Four members of the freshman team are also participating unat- tached. Johnny Wise, who can throw the javelin 175 feet, will face his first collegiate competition today. Quint Brelsford is slated to run the half mile, the event in which he now holds the state high school record. Frank McCarthy, Birmingham, Mich. freshman, will enter as a high jump- er and Neil McIntyre will run the 120-yard high hurdles. Although these thirteen men are Wolverine cinderpath performers, they are not being sponsored by the athletic department due to the fact that the meet takes place during examination week. All the atletes must, therefore, pay their own ex- penses. Pink, cf ...... Sofiak, ss..... Holman, rf .... Nelson, rf.... Steppon, 2b ... Trosko, if ..... Chamberlain, 3b Ruehle, lb .....
