South University shopping district has demonstrated the success of bringing stores to the doorstep of fraternity and sorority row on Washtenaw Avenue. Smart residents of the Washtenaw district have found the stores of South University Avenue are able to provide nearly all the articles necessary to the student and the housekeeper. Restaurants, drug stores, men's and women's clothing stores, barber shops, beauty shops, and grocery stores save the up- town resident countless needless steps through their prox- imity. The relaurants giving service to the resident of the dis- trict have a wide range of cuisine and prices, ranging from the casual Gridiron Shop, where the prevalent student taste for the hamburger is assuaged, to the "Varsity Grill", which permits its patrons the convenience of a dance floor. Other stores which sell meals to the residents of the district are the "Brown Jug", popular as a place for a "coke" date on the way home, the Carlson Pharmacy, and the University Drug Store. A i ,v Stores on South University catering to the need for male apparel are Rogers' and Charleys' Men's Wear Shop. The well-known bootery of H. W. Clark on, Forest Street sells shoes to many students and townspeople. The feminine de- partment of the Rogers store will supply the coed, as will the June Grey Shop, and the Town and College Shop. Lirette's Barber Shop, within a stone's throw of fraternity row, can take care of the most fastidious male taste in the matter of barbering and shaving. Lirette's also boasts the added convenience of a bootblack. For women, the South University district boasts many competent beauty shops, notably the Raggedy Ann Shop, the Groornwell Beauty Salon, and Jean's Beauty Shop. Grocery stores which attend to the needs of the house- keeper and casual buyer of groceries are numerous in this district. These are Jack's Grocery Store, Townley Brothers' Food Store, and Kroger's. Other stores which purvey to the various needs of the up- town resident are numerous and varied.
