Offer Wide Variety Of Choices True is the phrase that clothes make the man, but truer is the less commonly known axiom that shirts make the clothes. Not only can a good shirt turn an old suit into a smart outfit, but a poorly chosen shirt can ruin an en- tire ensemble. A black shirt with a blue suit, we will admit, would not only be in bad taste, but extremely unhealthy (for the wearer) as well. But a white coft collared, button- down, oxford shirt with a brown or reddish tie makes an extremely smooth outfit, even with the dark blue suit. There is nothing much neater for those conservatively inclined than Just that outfit finished off with buck all-white shoes with a thick rubber sole. But the proper shirts must be known. Shirts Are Light This spring, shirts will be light in both color and cloth. Made of light Madras, Twill Breeze, and porous Oxfords, these fabrics are not so light that they will not hold form or will stretch, but are light enough to be cool and comfortable. A two-ply Grenadine promises to be the most successful of these materials. This hardy cloth will be the favo- rite of men who like a touch of something different in their dress. The other textiles will be used in the regular spring shirts, which will range from Belmont colors and me- dium wide spread collars worn with a pin, to the modified and button- less trubernized Kents, which look more like tabless tab collars. But for the man who calls for something different, for the man with nerve and verve enough to wear his clothes as he likes them, it is the two-ply Grenadine shirts, in every pastel shade, that will be his favorite. There is something fascinating about a pastel. It is there in a Grenadine garment, and it is there in a field of fresh snow. It is some- thing indescribable-the solidness of the color and the shade that is achieved. A pearly gray, or a smooth buff looks extremely smart under a new, very popular camel's hair sport jacket. To be properly appreciated this shirt must be seen and they are on display in the better town haber- dasheries. New Stock Expansive For early spring, ,however, and for those conservative dressers who would rather not blossom out in bush coats and Grenadine shirts, and whom we have been promising some- thing, there are a great stock of new spring shirts to be had. In general, the ordinary shirts this spring will be bamboo and ecru or other light backgrounds. The well dressed man will wear shirts that are clean, clear, fresh and neat" If he likes, he may have stripes, and he probably will, but the stripes will not be clustered. The stripes may be single, double, triple, or even quad- ruple, but they will be simple like the British stripes of a few seasons ago. For ordinary afternoon, business and evening attire, the rather long three-inch point collars will be worn, with the previously mentioned med- ium wide spread. The collar meets all the requirements a man can ask of a shirt. For those who :are par- ticularly hard on a long-point collar, and -find their points wilting in hot weather, the trubenized, no-starch collars will be more practical but perhaps less comfortable. Stylists" Differ Leading stylists differ as to whether the universal favorite, the button- down collar, will return again this coming season. Some say the stu- dents have had their fill. We feel otherwise, and are inclined to side with those merchants who think it safe to stock up on the button-downs for some time to come. Although men have been wearing them for four or more years now, they are not tired of their practical comfortable shirts. It is with a special inward satis- faction that we mark the demise of f the white collar-collared body shirts which so many men took a delight to. These shirts, with false attached white collars and cuffs, made poor substitutes for the separate collar shirts. Sport Clothes Join Comfort And Style You wearers of sport clothes will Heavy, Loose Raglans Pass From Scene Reversibles Will Maintain Popularity As Standardj Tradition On CaipusI The idea that topcoats are unnec-- essary for spring is an extreme fal- lacy. Though the heavy winter jobs and the loose raglan topcoats that soj many of us have now, and had in 1929, are perfectly suitable for country wear, our tailors tell us that for spring days in town the ideal coat, the super- ultra-extra-special 'will be tailored to fit the figure in a tight squeeze, thus giving the figure that air of smartness and sophistication found so desirable when you've imported a bit of home town talent for the weekend. Reversibles Maintain Popularity Of course, local stores indicate that reversible topcoats will suffer no hu- miliation in sales this year. They are already a tradition; reversibles and saddle shoes have been for years the campus classic. But another type of coat is neces- sary for making that extra impres- sion. For example, how about a double breasted nifty made of natur- al tan covert cloth and carrying a small change pocket which admirably accommodates the overflow of fish- hooks and paper clips. This coat shoud end somewhere slightly below the knees and should be moderately waisted. The man who knows-and we do mean you-wears a starched white detachable collar and a bowler hat or or Homburg along with the coat. Herringbone Still In And the nthere is the gray herring-. bone that is bound to be popular this season. This coat is featured as a single-breasted fly front model, but can also be bought in a double- breasted edition. On the whole, however, it can be concluded that topcoats this year will be shorter, just slightly below the knee-length. And, as we've said be- fore, the irrepressible reversible will still be a candidate for top honors. One of the newer reversibles which looks to be a definite candidate for high mention is a dark gabardine and camel-hair job that is,.plenty smart. Incidentally, there must have been a plentitude of "ships of the desert," (Continued On Page 20) .I Leather, Cotton, Elastic Braces, Are Featured One of the most important prob- lems facing the male of the species is keeping himself clothed-literally, not figuratively. This means keeping his trousers at the correct altitude, correct for modesty, style and com- fort. This, in turn, involves belts and suspenders-or, more correctly,' braces. Little new invades the world of braces. This year, however, has seen the advent of "elasti-glass' braces, garters and belts. These ultra-modern items are available in colors as well as in the more conventional color- less model. Their most outstanding characteristic is their impermeabil- ity to perspiration and summer sweat. Broad cotton web braces are an- other comparatively new- item. They come in dark stripes, made from fabric imported from England, and sport snappy leather "bottoms" for attachment to button-studded waist- bands. Leather braces will be popular again this summer, available in plain pigskin or bright-dyed colors. They will be accompanied by the conven- tional elastic-backed silk numbers. Novel Wristwatch Has Several Dials A new wristwatch has recently been introduced that has, in addition to an ordinary dial, a split second hand which records to fifths of a second. A series of numbers on the center of the face aids In computing exactly how many miles per hour any moving object may be travelling. An outer dial can be used to determine how far away thunderstorms, gun fire and so forth are. Accesories to determine the para- bolic arc of a falling body may be hand for a nominal cost. It is very easy to learn how to tie one of these and they may be worn in place of collar and tie with neckband shirt in the country. Horsemen have favored this type of neckwear for many years, but re-' cently a taste for stocks has been shown by country gentlmen for all types of wear. 1 _______--.__ -- A Spring Tonic!
