On the first play, Pingel quick- kicked over the defense's head and Evashevski was downed on his own 26. After three futile trys at the center of State's line, Purucker punted from his 20 to Pingel, who stepped out of bounds on his 25 yyard line. Pingel was stopped on a try at right end, Szasz made five over left tackle, but Haney was stopped on the next' play and Pingel was forced to punt. His kick just barely rolled into the end zone for a touchback. The ball was brought out on the Michigan 20 and after Purucker was' stopped at the line, Trosko stepped through a big hole at his own left tackle for six. Purucker was again stopped and then punted out of bounds on the State 39. State could get but four yards in three downs and Pingel booted to Purucker who came back 12 yards to his own 23. On a reverse, Evashevski to Pur- ucker, Norm wriggled through right tackle for eight yards. Phillips made it a first down as he hit center for four. Three line smashes by Purucker, Phillips and Trosko, brought another first down on the State 45, but the Spartans braced and forced Purucker to punt and the ball was downed by Janke on the State 21. Two short passes by Pingel gave State a first down on their 39 and after two unsuccessful "trys by Szasz and Pingel, Johnny again took to the air, but over-shot his mark. Trosko intercepted the pass on his 45 and was downed on the State 47. On Michigan's second play, Puruck- er shot a 20 yard pass to Valek down the center and he got to the 24 be- fore being brought down as the quar- ter ended. Score: Michigan 0, Michigan State 0. SECOND QUARTER Michigan's ball on the 24. On fourth down, Kromer, in for Purucker, passed 4o Valek on the State 10 yard line where he was swarmed under by five State tacklers. After Kromer wa, -' stopped at left tackle, Phillips faked a reverse to him and hit center, driv- ing to the three. Kromer was again stopped at the line but on fourth down he pounded over his own right tackle for a touchdown. Valek place- kicked the point. Score: Michigan 7, Michigan State 0. Bruckner kicked off for State to Trosko who returned the ball from his own three to his 33 before Bruck- ner brought him down. After Kromer hit the line three times, he punted out of bounds on the State 18. The Wolverines stopped two plays and Pingel punted to Kromer who took the kick on the, Michigan 40, dodged half a dozen tacklers and fought his way 21 yards to the State 41. Kromer hit the line twice, and Trosko once, to no avail, and Paul kicked out of bounds on the State 24. Pingel shot a short pass to Nelson who reversed his field and went 14 yards to a first down on the 38. An- other pass by Pingel and his plunge through center for five brought a second first down on the 49. Pingel to Nelson again was good for eight and' Kovacich made another first down through left tackle. State was threat- ening but Michigan braced and took the ball on downs as three pass plays and a running play fell short. Harmon carried the ball twice and the first half ended. Score: Michigan 7, Michigan State 0. THIRD QUARTER, Rossi kicked off for State to the Michigan 15 where Harmon made the catch and returned it to the 37 by fast moving. Purucker made 10 yards and a first down circling his right end. After Phillips picked up five through tackle, Harmon, g o i n g through the same hole, raced to the State 33 but fumbled, and Gargett recovered for State. Ciolek returned the favor and Har- mon recovered his fumble two jjays later on the Spartan 43. After Har- mon went for 13 yards through left tackle two reverse plays and a pass failed and Purucker punted out of bounds on the State six yard lire. Ciolek was stopped at right end but on the "statue of liberty" play, Pearce took the ball from him and raced to a first down on the 17. Ciolek made five on a reverse and then passed to Diehl in the flat as the defense was sucked in. He was in_ the clear but was overtaken from behind by Har- mon who made the tackle on Michi- gan's 34. The threat was ended when Kromer intercepted Ciolek's pass on the 20.and returned it to the 35. Ciolek's pass was intercepted by Meyer on the 33 but after three plays, Hook punted to Ciolek on State's 25. Another "statue of liberty" play and Ciolek's, right end run brought five yards as the quater ended. Score: Michigan 7, Michigan State 0. FOURTH QUARTER A reverse through left, tackle by Haneyand, a pass, Pingel to Nelson, brought State two- first downs to Michigan's 38. Pingel's pass to Bruck- ner was good for 10 more but Puruck- er intercepted the next pass on the 12 and brought it back to the 20. An exchange of punts gained Michigan four yards and put the ball on the Wolverines' 23. Hook's drive through left guard brought a first down and Purucker followed up with a cut back through h right tackle for 15.
