A, JAN. 9, 1g THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAS SEVEN Wolverines Will Try To Square Series With Bulldog SwimmersI T h e Yale-Michigan swimming meet at the Intramural Pool Feb. 11 may prove the determinant of three moot questions: swimming suprem- acy as between the East and the West; the coaching abilities of Michi- gan's Matt Mann and Yale's Bob Kiphuth; and a combination of the two-a test of swimming balance. The East-West angle is obvious. Yale again is back on top in the East and the Wolverines are one of the West's two best. The rivalry between the two coach- es goes back many years. A decade ago, "swimming champions" and Yale were synonomous terms. And at the same time, Michigan under Mann was climbing toward the top. Yale Has Won Twice Yale pinned two defeats on the up and coming Wolverines, the second coming in 1930. And ever sine'e then Michigan wanted revenge. But Yale was too busy building up a string of consecutive victories LL. TRAINING ;n G - BUSINESS ENGLISH PONDENCE. to listen to the upstarts from the West. Matt Mann insisted that his teams, teams which won five con- secutive National Collegiate chain- pionships, were the country's bestl and clamored for the opportunity toI break the Yale undefeated bubble with the words getting slightly heat- ed. The third issue, the question of balance, is the one that will decide7 the meet. Neither team is depend-i ent upon "name" swimmers. For victories in close meets, both clubs plan on gathering enough seconds and thirds to win decisions. And Yale, this year, has balance. In the 100 yard free style, Yale has Capt. Johnny Good. Good has 11ready done 53.3 for the century and has not yet been pressed. And he's also good (no pun intended) in the 220. He set an Amherst pool record last week by doing 2:19. And this again without being ruffled Mr.I Good is a man to watch. Any Help Needed? If the Blue needs any help in the 220, there is Russ Duncan and Gordy Mustin. Duncan has done 2:17.2 and Mustin must be good for 2:23. In the short sprint, Elis have E. N. Perryman and Biil Moonan with the former the one to watch.; The Bulldogs don't let up in the breast stroke either. Here they have Paul Metcalf and Ed Gesner, both of whom can move. Metcalf can break 2:30 consistently with Gesner close behind. Danny Endweiss is formidable in the dive. Endweiss finished fifth in the National Collegiate) last year and has been going well so far this season.
