Varsity Faces Strong State Team Tonight Captain Leo Beebe Leads Five Starting Veterans In Opening Game (Continued rrom Page 1) quite a few thousand fans will watch tonight. Oosterbaan plans to start a veteran lineup but will hold in readiness sev- eral sophomores who have the poten- tial ability to break up anybody's ball game when they get hot. At the forwards will be Danny Smick, six foot four inch seven-letter man and speed merchant Charley Pink, a junior, who is the smallest regular, standing only five eight. Slim Jim Rae, whose excellent ball handling won him the regular center job last year as a sophomore, will man the pivot post and use his height to good advantage under the basket. Capt. Leo Beebe, a fine defensive player and veteran of two campaigns, will share the guard jobs with Eddie Thomas who was a forward last year and is fast and has an accurate eye. The front line of Rae, Smick and Pink will of course bear the brunt of the Wolverine attack. Rae is a fine natural player andat times shows flashes of form reminiscent of Town- send's style. Having overcome some defects in his play, Jim should be set for a big year. Smick is a good pivot too and his height gives him a na- tural advantage. Charley Pink is very fast and is death on those left- handed push shots from outside the foul circle. Certain to see some action, and per- haps more than is expected, are soph- omores Kerb Brogan, Lansing All- State long shot king, and Mike So- fiak, hard-battling Gary performer whose presence in the lineup serves as an inspiring influence. They are both small, five eight, and may play at either forward or guard. bT Rice's All-American Is Latest Honor For 'Hike' III 77/ 11 II MnIATCNISO LEiTXER" 0 STEERHIDE IFT'SET Watch his eyes sparkle when he opens this handsome gift box and finds inside: A HANDSOME CAMEO WAL- LET !Bill compartment with slid fastener - roomy window-pocket for cards-coin and auxiliary pockets.
