"Then there is the problem of dic- tion. Even a native German has to prepare very carefully for Wagner- ian diction. Non-Germans, such as I, must make a special study, not only of German, but of special Wagnerian German. Before coming to the United States, I had sung only in Norway and Sweden, except for two seasons at Beyreuth. When I arrived in Bay- reuth to sing for Frau Wagner and Intendant Tietjen, I sang as I was accustomed to, and learned that my Wagner style was not the orthodox Bayreuth style. I was told my dic- tion was not crisp enough. That meant setting to work not only in the roles I was to sing, but on a com- pletely new style of diction. "But perhaps the greatest need of the Wagnerian singer is the mental approach. The power of the Wagner characters lies in the fact that they are not story book people, but actual figures of history and legend who present to us real life, real emotion, real conflict."
