BUT-they don't make it. Led by
acting capt. Ralph Heikkinen, who
played the finest game of his bril-
liant career, and Don Siegel, Michi-
gan turns back the tide. Heikkinen
stops McGurn on the one foot line,
Hook, Siegel, and Evashevski throw
Ryan for a two yard loss, Fritz stops
Jefferson one yard short, and it's
fourth down, still one. Ryan fades
back, shoots a pass into the end zone,
but Purucker intercepts the ball and
grounds it for an automatic touch-
back.
Into the fourth quarter, the heart-
breaking quarter, went the two teams.
Michigan again strikes after three
and one-half minutes, moving 33
yards on runs by Kromer and Har-
mon and a sweet flank pass from
Harmon to Ed Phillips good for 22
yards to the Wildcat 35. A Kromer
pass and two Harmon passes fail, and
Jacki Meyer sends Dan, Smick back
to try for a field goal.
Coach Fritz Crisler immediately
stops that procedure by inserting
Evashevski at quarterback. Kromer;
punts over the goal line.

Southern Cal Upset
By Washington, 7-6
SEATTLE, Nov. 12-(P)-Those
University of Washington Huskies,
who, couldn't beat anybody a few
weeks ago, tripped up the mighty
championship-bound University of
Southern California football team,
7-6, on a slippery field here today
before 18,000 fans.
The Huskies' triumph was just as
convincing as it was amazing, and
sent the Trojans spinning into a
tie with the California Bears for the
Pacific Coast conference title. It was
Southern California's first conference
defeat of the season and its fifth
successive loss to the Huskies.
Southern California no doubt was
handicapped by the wet field, the cold
wind and rain in the third period,
and spent most of the game fighting
off Washington threats.

three plays, and when Smick partially
blocks Jefferson's punt on fourth
down the ball caroms out of bounds
on Northwestern's 38.
There are eight minutes to play.,
The Touchdown Twins cooperate,
Kromer making six on a nice block
by Harmon, and Tom picking up
eight and a first down, thanks to an
equally fine effort by Kromer. Har-
mon fades, passes flat to Evashevski
who crashes to the Wildcat 11 for
another first down.
Eleven yards to go for a title, six
minutes and 25 seconds to do it, but
it never materializes. Harmon, slash-
ing as only he can, fights to the three
on a cutback But the officials, whose
inconsistencies highlighted the after-
noon, call the play back, penalize
Michigan five yards for backfield in
motion, and that break costs Michi-
gan the ball game.
Two Harmon passes move the ball
to the seven, but Ed Phillips is al-
lowed only one on his delayed spin-
ner. There are still five yards to go
for a first down, six for a title touch-
down. Crisler sends Freddie Trosko
in to kick a field goal.
Trosko, whose conversions last year
gave Michigan two one point victories,
kicks-high enough, far enough, but
inches wide of the uprights. Michi-
gan's main threat is over.,
The Wildcats can't do anything and
punt to the Michigan 34. Thrce downs
fail to advance the ball and Purucker
drops back to kick. The pass is high
and three Wildcat linemen come tear-
ing in, the others dropping back, hop-
ing to protect the receiver on their
last punt return.
Purucker, ever alert, sees his punt
will be blocked and begins to run. The
clock hits one minute to play as he
starts down the sideline. The entire
Michigan team is in front of him and
cuts an aisle down the field. His pro-
tection slows up, however, and the
bolt of open space is closed up as
Ryan and Dick Richards seep through
to down him on the Wildcat 25 after
a 44-yard advance.

A crowd of 34,000 persons, largest

Panthers' 14 yard line near the end
of the first quarter, but there the
Huskers' only threat ended. Pitt took
command at that point and scored in
