Michigan's chances of successfully defending the Big Ten puck title which they shared last year with the pugnacious Gophers of Minnesota ap- pear exceedingly small as a swift per- usal of returning players and men lost indicates that the latter far over- shadows the former. But Coach Eddie Lowrey will have several veterans returning to furnish the backbone of what will probably be a very young team for the 1938-39 season. Heading the list is tall, sturdy, Les Hillberg captain and center of the first line this year. Flanking Hillberg on one wing will probably; be youthful Al Chadwick, the frail; appearing Detroit skater who can absorb amazing amounts of punish-, ment for one his size. Chadwick willl be playing in his second year of varsity competition.l Two Good Goalies George Cooke, the speediest man on the squad, and Evie Doran, hampered by ineligibility and a broken hand last season, are both expected to re-c turn and add immeeasurably to the scoring ability of the team-. Coach Lowrey is best fortified in the nets where Spike James, the re- mainder of the famous James combi- nation broken by the graduation of his high scoring brother, Gib, is ex- pected to return. And from the ranks of last year's yearling squad will come .Erwin Clahassey, a lad who has given indications of giving the veteran Spike quite a battle for the right to bat the pucks away from the Wolverine net. Stars Grakuatae However, Coach Lowrey is con- fronted with the task of replacing not only the aforementioned Mr. James, but also ex-captain Bob Simp- son, and Burt Smith last year's regular and only defense combination, as well as John Fabello, a speedy wing and James' scoring mate on the front line. The third member of outstand- ing first line, Smack Allen, the burly, hard-going red-head, who was the outfit's leading scorer in his first sea- son of play and chief play-maker, is not expected to return to school. Besides "classy Clahassey," the class of '41, barring the ineligiblity bugaboo, will provide several promising young- sters whom Coach Lowrey expects to develop into valuable additions to the team. There is Jim Anderson, the local lad who handles the puck with the smoothness of a veteran, Jim Tobin, another speedy forward, Jim Lovett, Herb Kilner and Burt Stod- den, all numeral winners. Charles Ross, husky, hard-shooting puck- chaser, Lawrence Calvert and Fred Heddle are defensemen who have in- herited the difficult task of replacing Simpson-Smith combination which so successfully guarded the rear line of the Michigan team last season. Practice for the heavy schedule of the coming season, which is featured as usual by the series with the Minne- sota Gophers, the winner invariably being conference champion, will get underway as soon as the Coliseum is ] i Hike is A Success As A Campaigner If Ralph Heikkenin is half as suc- cessful as a guard as he is as an elec- tion campaigner then he is almost a certainty for All-American honors. During the summer "Hike" traveled 16,400 miles in the upper peninsula, speaking Finnish in behalf of Harry S. Toy, candidate for the guberna- torial nomination on the Republican ticket. That the Michigan All-Conference guard was a success was attested to by the fact that the only three coun- ties that Toy carried in the entire state were those in which Hike elec- tioneered. opened sometime in late October early November. early November. /I l (..A IN ACTION!
