Strong, Veteran Golf Team Expected As good, if not better. That is the outlook for Michigan's golf forces for the season 1938-39 in comparison with last year's team which finished in third place in the conference championship and tied for seventh in the National Intercollegiate meet. All told, four letter winners will be absent when the linksmen step on the first tee to begin competition next spring. They are ex-Captain Al Kar- pinski, Bill Barclay, Fred Schwarze and Jim Loar. But two of these, Kar- pinski, and Barclay, played regularly last season, and the latter will be the most difficult to replace. Four Juniors Return On the asset side, four very promis- ing juniors, including Captain-elect Bob Palmer, are expected to provide the backbone of the team. Besides Palmer, returning juniors who have won letters are Lynn Riess, Tom Tuss- ing and Bill Black. Each should be of greater value to the team because of added experience and play this sum- mer. Add to these Jack Emery who was ineligible last year after having earned his letter the preceding sea- son, Bill Yearned, the long-hitting senior, Bill Warren also a senior and1 a letter winner, Ken Johnson and Ken McCarren, plus a promising crop of sophomores, and the Wolverine golf- ing picture for 1938-39 is fairly bright.
