Runs Win By NORMAN MILLER SOUTHBENDAMay 20.-(Special to -The Daily)--Bespectacled RussI Dobson weakened in the last two in- rings to give Notre Dame a 5 to 3 victory over the Michigan baseball team here today. The lanky hurler who was making his second mound appearance since the Wolverines' southern spring trip, had held the Irish to four scatter-d hits and was enjoying a 3 to 2 lead when he succumbed to a Notre Dame rally. Irish Tie Score The Irish tied the score on Dobson in the seventh on a single by relief pitcher Rex Ellis, an infield out, and a hit to center by pinch-hitter Chuck Farrell. Coach Jake Kline's charges sewed up the game in the eighth when Red Oberbrunner opened the inning with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Roy Pinelli and scored on Larry Doyle's line hit to center. Doyle continued to third when Pink let the ball go through his legs, and prompt- ly came home on Art Verhoestra's fly to Trosko. ' The Wolverines had opened the scoring in the second on Steppon's in- field hit, a sacrifice by Smick and Trosko's single to left. Notre Dame made it 1 to 1 in their half of the inning when Roy Pinelli walked, went to third when Smick let Doyle's grounder go through him and tallied on Art Verhoestra's fly to Trosko. The Irish went ahead in the third on Joe Nardone's double to left and Ray Pinelli's single to right. Smick Walks The Fishermen regained the lead in the fourth. Smick walked, went to secpnd on a wild pitch, rode home on Trpsko's second hit of the afternoon. Freddie stole second, and crossed the plate on Lisagor's single through shortstop. Michigan got rid of pitcher Mike Mandjiak in the sixth when the burly southpaw walked Steppon and Tros- ko, but could do nothing with offer- ings of big Ellis who allowed only one. man to reach base and fanned four in the last 3 2/3 innings. Due to the sudden downpour which 'washed out the clay courts, two of he nine matches were played in- doors at the Intramural Building, while the other seven were played on concrete courts. The Wolverines dropped both matches played on the indoor wood- en courts as Capt. Don Percival and Bob Jeffers lost to their opponents in straight sets. Capt. Harry Janowitz of the Illini, took advantage of the fast playing surface at the I-M build- ing to take Percival easily, 6-3, 6-2. His bullet-like drives skidded off the floor, making it. almost impossible for Percival to return them. Jeffers en- countered similar difficulties as he lost to Joe Mioduski, 6-3, 6-3. Tobin Triumphs On the outdoor concrete courts, the Wolverines met with much more success as they outscored Illinois, 4-3. Jim Tobin, playing in number two spot, won a close match from Ken Johnson, 6-4, 6-4, to put the Weirmen back in the running for a very short while. With the score at one all, John Kidwell lost out to Bob Crain, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, to give the Illim a lead which they never relinquished. Kid- well took the first set in easy fashion, but seemed to find the concrete courts difficult to master, as he lost the next tow sets to Crain, taking but one game in each. Porter Downs Johnson Jim Porter put the Wolverines back within striking distance as he downed Howie Johnson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Sam Durst, playing in number six spot, put up a terrific battle in trying to even the score of the match, but finally lost out to Bill Jones, 11-9, 2-6, 6-4. The loss broke a seven match winning streak for Durst. The victory was assured for Illinois when Ken Johnson and Joe Mioduski won the first doubles match from Capt. Don Percival and Ed Morris, 6-2, 6-1. The Weirmen closed up the gap in the score by capturing the second and third doubles matches, with the combinations of Jim Tobin and John Kidwell, and Steve Woolsey and Sam Durst turning in the wins. Tomorrow at 3 p.m. the Wolverines will' meet Ypsilanti Normal at Ferry Field. SUMMARIES Singles: Janowitz (I) defeated Per- cival (M) 6-3, 6-2. Tobin (M) de- feated K. Johnson (I) 6-4, 6-4.
