Students Cut' At Michigan, hGyp At Ohio But 'Ditch' In Chicago Collegiate Survey Shows Slang Varies Violently, With Section Of Country By JANE SAPPS "'Tain't what you say, it's the way that you say it," may have more logic to it than first meets the ear. Yet it's what you say that often causes the little pucker between the eyebrows. of your friends. How about the Pennsylvania Phi Bete who walked into a State Street grocery and said to the clerk, "Give me a poke." Rumor whispers that his entire eleven o'clock was consumed before he got the paper bag he want-1 ed. And then there was the case of the freshman from Pittsburgh who sud- denly decided that her room needed "redding up." No, she didn't paint; bright banners and sickles on her wall, or sprinkle red poppies on the carpet. Her roommate finally dis- covered that "redding" meant clean-, ing up the room, when she saw that - several layers of dust had vanished from the floor. "If I only hadn't 'blitzed' my 'French class is a common wail down in Canton, Ohio. Back in Cleveland or Lakewood one "skips" a lecture, while in Chicago one "ditches" where- as in Cansfield, Ohio, one can only "gyp." If your friend says "eh" after every I sixth word, "washes his clothes, and says "down town" it's four to one that he's from Detroit or spends his week- ends there. Martha Cook Gives Tea About 100 former Martha Cook residents attended the Alumnae Tea yesterday afternoon in the Martha Cook Be Room. Heart-shaped sand- wiches, ice, cakes, ice cream and tea were served. Chairman was Eleanor Smith, '39. chin bushes when they marry and] use hooks and eyes instead of buttons, "it makes wet" is the usual remark about the weather. The next time the door bell battery runs downI they will-,belikely to say "Bump, the bell- don't make." People around Mosher Hall are still mumbling about the cruelty of the little brunette who mentioned that she always put grease on her spider before she fixed the bacon and eggs. In this case the spider was an old black skillet, not her pet web maker, however. Students from Dayton, Ohio have to hold on to their tongues with both their hands to keep from saying, "Well?" after their friends' remarks. If someone says, "Golly, I look like a bored junk pile," it's so easy to say, "Well??" implying that a bored junk pile has a perfect right to look like a bored junk pile. What with Yankee accents, south- ern drawls, and a lisp every now and then, this campus could use a few united statements in between. Informality Is Key To Dress For Michigras This little world's fair called the Michigras that's coming off next: weekend necessitates a serious thought as to what the well-dressed girl wili wear. Anove all other things dress-up clothes are definitely not the thing to appear in. Casual clothes are the best bet- saddle shoes and all that goes with them. The smart suit shown in the picture is one of the most appro- priate things that could be worn. Ac- cordion pleated skirts with sheer blouses are cool and may easily be cleaned to free them of the layers and layers of dust that, accumulate. Shirt waist dresses with full pleat- ed skirts adapt themselves nicely to dancing on the Pi Phi Pent House and offer freedom while climbing on and off the ferris wheel. It's going to be a marvelous fair but promises to be just as dusty as last year so the final admonition is to go easy on the light colored clothes.
