CH17, 1939 THE 'M ICHIG~AN IiAILY Wolverine Track Squad Departs Today For Butler Bel ayK Michigan Seeks Sixth Straight Championship Gedeon, 'Watson Favored To Win In Individuals ; Hoyt To Take 22 Men Michigan's 22 man track squad will leave today for the Butler Relays, fa- vorites to retain the team champion- ship the Wolverines have won for the past five years in a row, Michigan will enter four strong teams in the university relay section of the Carnival. The one-mile relay team will probably reign as the fa- vorite as a result of its Conference record breaking 3:18.9 last week at Chicago. The one-mile quartet finished fourth last year as Pittsburgh, with its John Woodruff, won, but the Wol- verines have been strengthened no little by the addition of sophomores Phil Ialyeat and Warren Breiden- bach to veterans Ross Faulkner and Doug Hayes. Two-Mile Team Defends Title The only Michigan relay team which will be defending a Butler championship is the two-mile ag- gregation. Tom Jester, Dye Hogan, and Hod Davidson were all members of last year's winning team and soph- omore Art Cline is capable of filling Bill Buchanan's slot. The medley relay team lost out in a tough finish to Indiana last year but the Hoytmen appear to have a great chance for victory if nothing goes wrong. Leutritz Runs Sophomore Jack Leutritz is booked to run the first leg, a quarter-mile, and he will be followed in order by a veteran lineup. Tom Jester will run the half, Hod Davidson the three- quarters' and Ralph Schwarzkopf the anchor mile. The four-mile team has two sopho- mores in its ranks in Ed Barrett and Karl Wisner. Brad Heyl and Schwarz- kopf, booked for his second mile stint of the night, make up the remainder of the team which will be seeking revenge for the ignominy of a third place last year. - Strong In Individuals In addition to the team events Michigan will have strength galore in the individual events. Elmer Gedeon in the high and low hurdles, and Capt. Bill Watson in the shot put are favorites to win their specialties, while Don Canham in the high jump and Al Smith in the 6Oyard dash may, by virtue of their surprise sec- ond places in the Big Ten meet, come through with a win. Watson will meet with stiff com- petition from Elmer Hackney of Kansas State who defeated Bill at the Illinois Relays earlier this year. Canham will meet up with Bob Diefenthaler of Illinois who beat him at Chicago, and 'team-mate Wes Al- len, if the injured Wolverine star is able to throw off the affects of sev- eral weeks layoff due to an injured knee. Smith will get most of his competition from Wilbur Greer of Michigan State, last year's winner in 06.3. Other Michigan entries in individu- al events are Stan Kelley and Jeff Hall in the hurdles, Watson in the broad jump in which he placed sec- ond last year, Carl Culver in the 60- and broad jump, and Bob Hook in the shot pgt.
