THE MICHIGAN DAILY4 1' / PRESS PASSES Hockey Team To Meet Point Edward Here Tonigh 'v By BUD BENJAMIN- Jumping The Gun . . . THE TRACK: "A walkaway! Huh, not in my book. It willabe a tough, closely contested meet all the way. In my book, Michigan and Wis- consin will tie at 33 points." The speaker-Coach Charles B. Hoyt. The mat: "We have a chance. It will be between Michigan and In- diana all the way. We are at full strength except for Butch Jordqn who is far out of conditions. If we pick up enough falls, we will win." As spoken by Coach Cliff Keen. The pool: "We'll take it. Sure, it's not easy to come right out and say it, but I think we will. We have a great bunch of kids, ind they're out to win." Ennunciated by Coach Matt Mann. And there you have what might be called a progression in opti- mism. Charlie Hoyt-conserva- tive, careful, rarely encouraging, but not a chronic worrier. Cliff Keen-usually pessimistic, never certain, always worrying. Matt M a n n - effervescent, genial, bursting with confidence. The three by their very nature punc- tuate the opinions. Yet in all three cases there is a fac- tual background which transcends the persofnalities that have undoubtedly shaped these views. To a cursory appraisal of the problems whih the three men face. HOYT who refuses to predict no matter how long the odds may be, faces a new challenge in the entry of Wisconsin, a rapidly rising Con- ference track power. The Badgers boast of some of the top talent in the Conference and in several events are actually beyond reach. Take Walter Mehl, the Badgers' brilliant distance man, for example,. Defending two mile champion both indoors and outdoors, Mehl cracked the Conference and collegiate record at Columbus last spring with a 9:10.4 performance. Unless Ralph Schwartz- kopf of Michigan outdoes himself, this is a cinch Badger first. Mehl will also compete in the mile, and Hoyt is weighing the advisability of countering by putting Schwartzkopf in the same event. Still Mehl must be rated as a first place winner. Taking those 10 points, you can safely add nine more. Milt Padway and Bob Gardner of the Badgers are 13 foot plus pole vaulters and should finish one- two. Padway soared 14 feet 1 inches in the Minnesota dual meet this year. The high jump is a question mark. Wes Allen of Michigan the favorite is still limping with a knee injury, and Capt. Bill Watson hasn't done much jumping since he went 6 feet 5 inches outdoors last May. Riley Best and Gardner of Wisconsin have gone 6 feet>2%/ inches and that means more points, especially if Wes is out. In the hurdles, Ed Smith of Wisconsin has gone 60 yards in :07.5 and while talk of his beat- ing Elmer Gedeon seems a little out of order, he must be counted among the point winners. He finished second to Gedeon in the 120 highs at Columbus. Another Badger hurdler Bob Brandt may be a factor, and thus Stan Kel- ley's work in this event takes on a new importance.' Add Frank Kauffman, second in- doors and third outdoors, in the sprints, and Bill Malisch, third out- doors, in the shot, and your Badger total increases. Charley adds them up to 33. His addition also gives Michigan 33. Phil Diamond will be in later this week with his calculations. And Sunday you'll have the answer. That's Daily service, _my friends. NOW to Mr. Keen's squad and their outlook. Assuming an average amount of falls, Michigan should win if .. Capt. Harold Nichols, brother Don Nichols, and Butch Jordan take firsts; Jim Mericka and Frank Mor- gan, seconds; and Bill Combs, third. That gives Michigan 22 points, one more than Indiana is booked to amass. Mericka at 136 pounds will up with Archie Deutschman of Illinois, favored to win the na- tional title. Morgan, a good shot for first place, dust first dispoe of his old rival Chauncey Mc- Daniel of Indiana. Combs is con- servatively listed behind Lazzeri of Indiana and Bond of Illinois. Harold Nichols should win at 145 pounds without too much trouble, and brother Don's only obstacle will be that tough Chris Traicoff of In- diana. Getting down to Jordan, Butch would take it without too much exertion given normal physical con- dition.
