Orient Courses To BeTaught Two courses on Far Eastern sub- jects will be given next semester in the Department of Oriental Lan- guages and Literatures, Prof. Leroy Waterman, chairman of the depart- ment, has announced. Dr. Y. Z. Chang of the Far Eas- tern Institute will again give a course on Chinese civilization, and Joseph Yamagiwa, also of the Institute, will offer a new course on Japanese lit- erature in English. The basic ideas and forces and the national tempera- ment of the two countries which un- derlie their civilizations and litera- tures will be carefully treated, Pro- fessor Waterman said. Both courses are in the Far Eas- tern concentration program, under which courses in the Chinese and Japanese languages are being given with credit this year for the first time in University history. Griggs To Publish Book Next Month An American edition of "Thomas Clarkson, the Friend of the Slaves" by Prof. Earl L. Griggs of the English department will be published some- time next month by the University Press, it was announced yesterday by Dr. Frank E. Robbins, managing ed- itor of the Press. The American edition will be print- ed from the plates of the English edition with a new title page.
