Bachmann of the chemistry department. Professor Bachmann has been studying and experimenting with the chemical factors involved in cancer for three years. He is seeking to iso- late all the chemical compounds which can cause cancer, so that an agent can be found which will neu- tralize their effect. He pointed out that although it is possible human cancer may not be causedo by any chemical compound, the results shown thus far by his workI and by that of the Royal Cancer Hos- pital in London justify further re-} search. The cancer-producing compounds found thus far by 'Professor Bach- mann and his associates, and by Drs. Cook and Kennaway, of the Royal Cancer Hospital, are related in that all of them are built of benzene rings. A benzene ring is a molecule com- posed of six carbon and six hydrogen atoms arranged in a hexagonal pat- tern. It has been found that a clear solu- tion made from a cancerous growth will produce tumors, and this is the basis for ProfessorHBachmann's lat- est experiment. He has produced soluble derivatives of the known can- cer-producing compounds, all of which are normally insoluble solids. He believes that a soluble compound, if injected into the blood stream, may have more effect on internal organs than the insoluble ones used so far. The first cancer-producing com- pound was isolated from coal tar by Cook, and is known as benzpyrene. It was noticed that this compound had a peculiar arrangement of the benzene rings, so other compounds with a similar arrangement were tried on mice. One, methylcholanthrene, 5, 6-ibenzanthracene. The omly one of these compounds which occurs out- side the- laboratory is benzpyrene,_ formed during the production of coal tar. All the others must be made in the laboratory. Professor Bachmann's associates here include Alfred Wilds, John Che- merda and William Struve, who are 1 working for their Ph.D. degrees, and Dr. Milton Kloetzel, who holds the DuPont Post-Doctorate Fellowship. Dr. James Bradbury of the depart- ment of obstetrics and gynecology of the School of Medicine is conducting the actual1application of the com-l pounds on mice. State Education Official Will Address Teachersf The teachers of the laboratory schools of the University, University High School and University Elemen- tary School, in conjunction with Lin- coln and Roosevelt Schools of the Ypsilanti State Normal College will hold their annual banquet at the Union tomorrow night.- The speaker will be Dr. J. C. Parker, director of the Secondary School Cur- riculum Study of the Michigan De-_ partment of Public Instruction. Thef toastmaster will be Henry Tape, principal of Lincoln School.
