Schwarzekopf Speeds
Ralph Schwarzekopf, the "Gallop-
ing Automaton" running alone and
unpushed, caused timers to hesitate
before turning in the reading on
their watches. The loosely built
sophomore never varied more than a
second from his prearrranged sched-
ule as he ground out the thirty-two
laps finishing the last quarter with
a58 second blast that left the on-
lookers searching for superlatives.
Ross Faulkner running his first race
since before Christmas negotiated the
first 220 yards of his quarter at a
burning 23.5 pace, finishing strong
but only a stride in front of Harvey
Clarke.
Undismayed by Faulkner's perfor-
mance in the first heat of the quarter,
Doug Hayes, tow-headed utility run-
ner who has tried everything from
the sprints to the steeplechase, out-
raced a flight of seasoned quarter-
mnileirs to better Faulkner's time in the
previous heat by two-tenths of a sec-
ond.
Gedeon Clips Highs
The supremacy of Elmer Gedeon in
the high hurdles remained unshaken
andi appeared practically unshakable
despite top-notch hurdling by sopho-
mores Stan Kelly and Sherman Olm-
sted. Gedeon, doing his first term as
a Varsity trackster, clipped the bar-
riers in the Osgood manner to show
the assembled Hotstove experts that
the Hoytmen will not be deficient in
the hurdles.
Big Bill Watson put in his after-
noon, pushing the shot out past the
white cloth he had placed at the 50-
'foot mark by a good healthy margin,
taking a few swings over the high
jump bar set at close to six feet then
running through a heat in the 60 two
feet in front of the pack to top the
day.
Jim Kingsley sailed over the pole-
vault standards with inches to spare
as he cleared 13 feet but his sopho-
more cohort in the event, Dave Cush-;
ing found the ceiling at 12 feet 6
inches.
