Striking out emphatically against stalling charges levied against it, the wrestling heads have taken definite steps to both step up the tempo of the game and add audience interest. Chief sore spot in grappling circles during the last decade has been the "ride." Wrestlers have been prone toI rely so heavily on this maneuver that they have forgotten the chief purpose of the sport, namely to gain a fall. Would Gain Time In the ride, a man would get a hold on one of his opponents or get behind him, hang on, and thus mount up a time advantage to give him a victory. The result has been dull encounters with one man struggling to free him- self, the other hanging on desperately to maintain his advantage. Not that the ride is merely a brute strength accomplishment and doesn't require technical prowess. It demands prac- tically as much skill to secure as a fall, but it lacks crowd appeal-es- sential in the success of any sport. Now Last Nine Minutes The new rule is simply a new en- forcement of an old one, but it has the teeth which the old dictum lacked. Match time has been reduced from 10 to nine minutes. If, at the end of the first three minutes, neither opponent has gained an advantage, the match is divided into two periods of three minutes each, with each man having opening advantage in one of the per- iods. Last year, the division was two- four-four. Michigan; Matheny and Gmitro, MinnesotaJeffersono.Northwestern. Promising Material For Varsity Is Developed By Jayvee Squad By HERB LEV y "Well, the boys had a lot of fun out of it, and they really did quite well in their four game schedule," was Coach Ray Courtright's opinion of the recently completed Junior Var- sity football .season. According to Courtright the Jay- vee season wasn't strictly a success because the venture did not accom- plish its chief purpose, namely, to develop promising sophomores who were not quite up to Varsity standard at present, in anticipation of future Big Ten campaigns. Material Was Scarce The main handicap which con- fronted Courtright this fall was a shortage of material. Receiving only eight players from Coach Kipke's Varsity squad, he was forced to lit- erally scour the campus for grid tal- ent to fill out his team, and, of course, the newcomers were mostly boys with very limited football ex- perience. From the original eight, one play- er, Jack Kinsey, fullback, was re- called by the Varsity in mid-sea- son. At least four others, including Dave Gates, halfback, Herman Ule- vitch and Jerry Belsky, guards, and Tom Hutton, center, should merit consideration for Varsity berths next year by virtue of their fine show- ing in the Jayvee games. Benefitted More On Jayvees However Courtright feels that this quartet would have benefitted muchI more had they been kept on the first squad, seeing action in the Varsity scrimmages and possibly occasional ! game service.4 There was but one bright spot in the fact that the Junior Varsity was forced to pick up outsiders to fill out the team. Courtright thinks he general, Ochs should be in the thick of the fight for a position on next year's eleven. Jack Weiner, a burly tackle, Al Ricketts and Tom Courtney, half- backs, and Paul Penvenne and Chuck Bowers, ends, are others who showed definite promise, but could hardly rate serious Varsity consideration at present. N.Y.U. Has Goat Mascot For Game With Fordhan NEW YORK-New York Univer- sity can't very well use a Violet for a mascot, but a couple of students have found a rival for Fordham's l Ram to display at Saturday's intra- city game. For the sum of $18, two Af them bought a goat, which they named Miss Violet. They hope she turns out to be white after a wash- ing and they hope the game will turn out like last year's so they canan- nounce it was Fordhams goat they fgot. Absolutely no credit is given for time advantage. The decision, in case there is no fall, -is rendered solely by the referee on the basis of which man has shown in best wrestling abil- ity in attempting to secure a fall. Thus, merely riding an opponent is valueless. Would Ride To Stall Last season, a man holding an ad- vantage was supposed to be penalized, unless he attempted to go for a fall, that is if he merely "stall rode." This year, he has to go for a fall or he loses all chance., of winning a decision. The old rule was not readily enforce- able. This one will be. In the East, where wrestling enjoys wide popularity, the ride has not de- generated to a stall measure and the bouts have, consequently been a lot more interesting. Ample proof of-this is the fact that in the Eastern Inter- collegiates last year, 22 falls were registered. In the Big Ten meet only three falls were secured. Wrestling Coach Cliff Keen, long an advocate of this type of measure, is well pleased with, its passage. His lone worry now is whether the ref- erees will be capable of filling their new responsibility. Whether they are or not is conjectural, but the new measure is well worth the risk. It's a hypo for a sport that really deserves a break. SKATES SHARPENED Lengthwise of Blades.
