Casey Lopata, Tech halfback start- ed the march that led to Detroit's touchdown, when, midway through the second period, he intercepted Dave Gates' pass and ran to Michi- gan's 25 yard line. A pass from Ralph Qualman, right halfback, to Alex De Misko, sub end gained 9, then Qual- rhan tossed one over the goal line to Quarterback Ed Kleponis for the score, Qualman kicked the extra point. Michigan first threatened early in the first quarter. Taking the ball in mid-field, Michigan, led by Captain Gates, started a drive which ended on the Tech 3 yard line. After taking Qualman's punt on the 50, Gates circled right end for 15 yards on the first play, then added 16 more on a 1.4teral from Al Ricketts. After a line play failed, Gates hurled a pass to Paul Penvenne, who was downed on the 10. Gates plowed to the 5 on first down, but then the Detroit line buckled up and Tech took the ball on line, b t once again Detroit's line downs. Michigan's second big chance came as the second half opened, when a bad pass from center got past Lopata, and 1Mel Kramer recovered for the Wolver- ines on the Tech 12 yard stripe. Gates and Jack Kinsey drove to the 2 yard line, but onec again Detroit's line held, and the ball was lost on downs. EAST Amherst 12, Wesleyan 2 Army 47, Washington U. (St. Louis) 0. O., Oct. 23.-UiP)- Iowa Ohio North State hwestern na Igan ... ago...... is S e. .. . . Ohio State knocked Northwestern from the heights of unbeaten teams today, winning 7 to 0 and practically erasing the 1936 Big Ten champions from the title picture. The victory before 67.521 fans kept the Ohio slate clean for two Western' Conference tilts. Dick Nardi, halfback, retained his scoring record for the season by counting the lone touchdown in the third period after the most bitter of b'attles. Nardi has one touchdown in each of the four Buck contests. The Ohioans playing alert and heads-up ball against the defending champions, took advantage of the game's big "break" to crash through. Twice in the second period they were halted on the 12-yard line by a de- termined Wildcat line. Break Comes The break came just a minutel after Northwestern had been re- pulsed twice, once on the Ohio four- yard mark and again on the seven, ifrom where Fullback Jack Ryan missed a place kick. Ohio took the ball on the 20, and Howard Wedebrook booted to the Wildcat 30. A pass failed, and then Bernard Jefferson, Negro Wildcat halfback, backed up to punt. Karl 1Kaplanofi' crashed through to block the kick, and Warren Chrissenger, substitute Ohio guard, fell on the ball on the 26. Nick Wasylik, the flashy halfback from Astoria, N. Y., ripped around right end for 12 yards, and then' Johnny Rabb and Wedebrook carried it to the four on line bucks. Nardi slipped over guard for the touch- down which planted the Bucks right in the middle of the Big Ten cham- pionship scrap, from which they were eliminated a year ago. Freak Paint The point after touchdown was a classic. Co-Captain Quarterback Jim McDonald elected to place-kick for the point, with Mike Kabealo holding the ball. Voigt, Northwestern right tackle, broke through to block the kick, but Kabealo picked up the ball and tossed it to McDonald, who raced around right end for the marker. Both coaches, all the players and four officials argued for at least five minutes before the official de- cision that the point was good was forthcoming. The officials ruled that since the ball did not cross the line of scrimmage, it was a free ball, and that the point was as good as if the placekick had been made.
