THE MICHIGAN DAILY Play Production By ViRiting D By MARIAN SMITH The University of Michigan was rated one of the finest schools for training young dramatists by Whit- ford Kane, guest director and male lead in the opening Play Production presentation "Excursion," in an in- terview yesterday. Mr. Kane pointed out that the stock companies have become a thing of the past and their work is now being carried on largely by dramatic schools in universities and colleges throughout the country. He claimed that the value of university work can be estimated by the large number of talent scouts sent out by Hollywood producers. - "It would be advisable for Broadway to follow this practice and look for new talent among young student dramatists." Mr. Kane spoke highly of the choice of "Excursion" for Play Production students "for," he stated, "it will help the students to loosen up through the definite comic element of the play and the freedom it allows to the stu- dent to act naturally." He also spoke of the desirability of the play be- cause of the opportunity it gives for a large number of students to appear. In speaking of the talent found among college students he indicated that he often found these young ac- tors much better than professionals. Freshness, enthusiasm and sincerity were among the attributes he found in students. "These things make work with students much more en- joyable," he continued. "There isde- cided refreshment in changing from professional stage work to that of di- rector of a student production," he said. Mr. Kane spoke highly of Shake- W ork ' our De ocratsadding machine No. 1-162596 please." " Work Praised Young Democrats report to the undersigned. Union Officials Will r t DAILY OFFICIAL Herbert G.
