THE MICHIGAN DAILY PR ESS PASSES -By BUD BENJAMIN - tLooks Bad... THAT BIG TEN-Pacific Coast track meet, June 25, should be a great affair. Luminaries from the two toughest leagues in the business will tangle, and the meet might be called track's All-Star gome. 'Last year, any midwestern feeling of supremacy was rudely jolted when the western- ers took the Conference into tow 92 to 44. They are strongly favored again this season, although the Big Ten contingent should chop that margin down considerably. Traveling with the California base- ball te8,m this week on their eastern trip was one William Fallon, their, trainer. Ann Arbor is familiar ter- ritory to Bill; he got his start in the conditioning racket h e r e under. Charlie Hoyt. Two years ago he left to take the head job at Cal. Says Wil- Lam in regard to the track meet: "There's no doubt about the outcome of the inter-Conference met. The Big Ten has Watson, Fenske, , Mehl, and Albritton. Watson looks like a winner in . the shot, Fenske is a sure bet in the mile, Mehl in the two mile, with place points possible in these last two events. Albritton will have a battle and everything else , s4 Pacific Coast. "U.S.C. has three 14 foot pole vaulters, 47 second quarter men are abundant, crack sprinters !. cm ieadozen, a Javelin toss of 215( feet is not extraor- dinary, the discus gets 165 feet rides frequently. It's in the bag," he concluded. A prejudiced viewpoint, no doubt, but nevertheless we're afraid Mr. Fal- lon has the dop'e. TRAVELING: Ralph Schwartzkopf sophomore two-miler, will enter the special three-quarter mile race at the Princeton Invitational Meet, June 18i Ed Kirar and Tom Haynie, ex- captain and captain-elect of the swimmers, will be Pacific coast bound late in June to perform at a big swim show in Los Angeles. Harry Rieke, varsity backstroker, is Alaska bound right now. Adventure, they say. Fritz Crisler goes to Cleveland Monday to speak to alumni there. He'll be in- terviewed over the radio by George Rich, football captain in 1928 and president of the local, alumni group. ]ICKUPS: When they pass out golf letters at Denison College, one of the recipients will be Janet Shock, ta co-ed . .. one of the finest amateur golfers in Ohio, she overcame all ob- stacles to "win a varsity berth .. . and Is holding her own . . . Softball Finals Set ForToday Phi Delts Oppose Theta Xi For Fraternity Crown Tom Harmon of Phi Delta Theta will hurl against Tom Black of Theta Xi when their two teams tangle today in the title go of the I-M fraternity softball league. Wines Field, the home of the Ann Arbor high school football teams, will be the scene of action instead of Pal- mer Field as was originally an- nounced. In the Independent league, the Doughboys and the Wolverines will play today at South Ferry Field for the softball crown. Bob Ross will pitch for the Wol- verines, while Ed Thomas, Varsity rbasketball star, will be on the mound for the Doughboys. The Triangle horseshoe team suc- cessfully defended their title in the fraternity league when they defeated Trigon 2-1 yesterday in the final round of this year's tourney. Art Rissberger and Dick Johnson, playing on the number one Triangle team, subdued Tom Lawton and How- ard Awig of the Trigons, 4-21, 21-20, 21-16. In the second doubles match, Granville Conrad and Bill Blakley of Triangle whipped . Cohn Weymouth and Gil Van Schaik, 21-7, 21-8. Trigon won the third doubles match when Jim Lovett and Roland Athay defeated Ken Evenson and Cliff El- liot, 21-12, 21-8. Oosterbaan Names 20 For Numerals Twenty members of the freshman baseball squad were named for nu- 'meral awards by Coach Bennie Oos- terbaan. The squad possesses a great deal of infield and pitching strength which should be of considerable help to the Varsity next year. Those named were Art Bergeson, Ridley Park, Pa.; Bill Cartmill, Ver- ona, N.J.; Richard Gorecki, Stuart Japinga, George Ruehe and Bill Steppon, Detroit; Mason Gould, Scarsdale, N.Y.; Louir Held and Paul Willman, Indianapolis, Ind.; Frank Jankowski, Grand Rapids; George Knapp, Ypsilanti; Harry Kohl, Day- ton, 0.; Walter Loerscher, Rochester, N.Y.; Bill Luther, Toledo, O.; Fred Rockey, Ann Arbor; Neil Muir, Dry- den; Charles Ross, Cambridge, Mass.; Gilbert Sauer, Buffalo, N.Y.; May- nard Stoddard, Davison; and Les Veigel, Tuscarawas, O. Watson Leads Squad Into A.A.U. Meet Captain-elect Bill Watson heads a band of 12 Wolverine athletes who are taking a brief respite from the pre-examination study period today to travel to Grand Rapids for the State A.A.U. track and field meet. Those making the trip besides Wat- son are Walt Stone, Stan Kelley, Wes Allen, Jim Kingsley and Ralph Schwartzkopf of this year's Varsity, Phil Balyeat, Warren Breidenbach, Bob Barnard, Jim Monahan and Don Canham of Ken Doherty's frosh squad, and Clayt Brelsford, who fin- ished his Varsity track career last year. No Wolverines were enterd in last year's meet but it is expected that a goodly share of the first place medals will fall to those making the trip to- day. Fischer And Kocsis Play In Cup Matches Today . ' ,:. When 15 men last year he looked to Ken Doherty's freshman squad to fill up the gaps left by the late Steve Mason, Bob Osgood, Sammy Stoller, Stan Birleson, Ben Starr, Clayt Brelsford and 10 more lettermen.. That he found the needed replacements is evi- dent from the undefeated record cr m- piled by Hoyt's Big Ten champs this year. Next year Hoyt's task looks to be much easier than it was this 'year. Instead of drafting more than half his team from the frosh squad as was the case this year he will need to dig up only five or six replacements for next year's aggregation. Cushing To Shoulder Burden Michigan's losses this year are Jimmie Kingsley, Fred Martin, Walt Stone, Jake Townsend, Sandy Far- rell and Chuck Miller. All but Kings- ley are graduating in June and the Conference co-champion pole vaulter expects to finish his college career via the summer school route so that he may enter Harvard Law School in the fall. With Kingsley ond Farrell gone it looks like the burden of the pole vaulting assignment will rest on the shoulders of Dave Cushing, who will be a junior, and the freshmen. The frosh are sending up Tem Ogden, Bob Buritz and Bernie Sisman but the outlook in the vault is none too promising. Martin Hard To Replace To take Townsend's place mens to take over the number two iron ball pushing and platter heaving job be- hind Bill Watson, Big Ten number one in both events. Bob Hook looks like the man of '41 to slip in the shot putting slot left vacant by Town- send. Hook has the build for a weight man and has pushed the iron ball 45 feet as a yearling. Discus prospects are not quite so good. Bill Cochrane is the best looking of the freshmen. Fred Martin, who has consistently thrown the javelin 200 feet this year, will be another hard one to replace. The Varsity has no other who can touch 150 feet so the frosh with Bob Michaels-Stern and other fine makes SUITS NOW 1/3OFF 3SUITS...$20.00 $35 SUITS... $23.75 $40 SUITS ... $26.75 $45 SUITS ... $29.75 ARROW SHIRT SALE $1.39 and $1.59 McGregor Sport wear Swim Trunks $2.50 Sport Shirts $1.00 A,. Miller's loss as a relay quarter miler will cause no qualms for Doherty's squad has plenty of power in the 440 distance. Jack Leutritz, Warren a new freshman one-mile relay rec- ord, are good enough to give this year's Varsity a good battle. Add to these yearlings Bob Bar- nard, Paul Kromer, and Jim Mona- han in the sprints, hurdler Jeff Hall, half-milers Art Cline and Howie Eg- ert and high jumper Don Canham and shed no tears for Charlie Hoyt. He will have another Michigan track team which is just another way of saying that it will be plenty good. Re .building Championship Track Team.
