Square Dances
Will Be Given,
President Ruthven To Talk
Before Annual Breakfast
In Honor Of Graduates
The social program of the Summer
Session of the University will center
around the League and be directed by
Miss Ethel McCormick, League social
director. Two important events how-
ever will be in the charge of Prof.
Louis A. Hopkins, director of the Sum-
mer Session.
The first of these two events will be
the annual student-faculty reception
to be held the first Friday of the ses-
sion, July 1. Plans are progressing
to hold it in the Horace H. Rackham
School of Graduate Studies, and an
attendance of approximately 4,000 is
expected, Professor Hopkins said.
Breakfast To Be Given
The second of the two events closes
the Summer Session. It is the second
annual breakfast, given to correspond
to commencement for those who re-
ceive their master's degrees at the
end Of summer. Taking place on the
last Sunday morning of the session,
its main address will again be given
by President Ruthven. Professor
Hopkins explained that many of the
graduate students who attend the
University only in the summer never'
meet the President and deans of the=
various schools, a desirable function'
which the breakfast accomplishes.,
There were 400 in attendance last
year with the deans as guests and
the executive board of the graduate
school and their wives acting as hosts
and hostesses.
Social Hours Planned
Miss McCormick, said that the us-..
ual League summer program would beI
again carried out, with its principal
objective to acquaint students and
faculty members as early as possible.
Thus they may take advantage of
the acquaintanceship for the full
length of a comparatively short sea-
son. In this connection, variousi
schools and departments customarily
plan Sunday night suppers and others
group activities.
More general League-sponsored ac-
tivities have already been planned, to
be continued throughout the session.
Dancing is prominent, and an innova
tion is to be the teaching of country
square and mixer dances. Charlie
Zwick's orchestra will play for the
gatherings which will be held Mon-
day evenings free of charge. The
name of the instructor will be an-
nounced later, Miss McCormick said.
Zwick To Play
Charlie Zwick will also play for the
weekend dances to be held in, the
League ballroom at the same hours
as the winter dances, but with the
difference that stags are encouraged
to attend, and girls act as official
hostesses. Tea dances, given every
Wednesday afternoon, are even more
informal. Faculty wives pour, and

both faculty and students are invited.
Like the square and tea dances,
ballroom dancing classes will be free
of charge and open to stags. Be-
ginning and intermediate classes will
be taught by Miss McCormick on
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings re-
spectively.
Bridge also is important in Sum-
mer Session, and a course of six les-
sons for $1.50 will be taught by Con-
way McGee. Mr. McGee has run
tournaments on campus and taught
classes during the year with much
success, according to Miss McCormick.
Special group, activities already
planned include a watermelon cut
given annually by the Southern Club.
The club is made up of southern stu-
dents, and the function is held in the
League Garden. The watermelons are
cut end to end and eaten out of hand.

To Hold Summer
Vesper Services
An important part of the religious
education program .of the Summer
Session will be three Campus Vesper
services. They will take place Sun-
day evenings, July 3, July 17 and
August 7, on the Library steps, ac-
cording to Dr. E. W. Blakeman,
Counselor in Religious Education.
"The music for the Vespers will
be conducted by Professor David Mat-
tern, who will be assisted by the
University Chorus, the Summer
School Orchestra, and a special solo-
ist. Each Vesper will be introduced
'by a "Call to Worship" from 7:20 to
7:30 p.m. by Wilmot F. Pratt, caril-
lonneur," Dr. Blakeman said.
"At the first Vesper, which will be
a patriotic occasion, the address will
be given by Prof. L. A. Hopkins, di-
rector of the Summer Session. Speak-
ers and special music for the second
Vesper will be announced
