Or perhaps this song conjures up only visions of the natives loveliness, dreamy-eyed maidens who sing love' songs under blue skies - and lends little plausibility to the existence of such a "heaven on earth. Bali is, however, a very real place, and is deservingly called the "pearl of the South Seas." Bali is not often considered suitable for the neophite who is planning a very limited trip, but for the seasoned traveler who is, in search of real natural beauty and tranquility, it is the ideal vacation spot. Bali is located in the South Seas immediately east of Java island and is part of the Netherlands Indies. It is small, of volcanic origin and of ex- cellent fertility because of the ac-I cumulated volcanic ash. One will first become acquainted with Bali in the harbor of Buleang, which is particularly impressive early in the morning. Anchored a short distance from shore a colorful sight will meet ones eyes-row upon row of Dutch style houses in contrast with others of steep-thatched roofs. Buleang is too much like a typical European city, and it is not until one gets deep into the countryside, away from the artificialities of mod- ern living, that the magnificent scenic beauty strikes with full force. Ameri- can automobiles are available for the trip to the interior. Naturally a tropical island like Bali grows a wide variety of fruits, flowers and trees, some known to Western eyes, while others are as strange as an umbrella on a sunny Heidelberg Universty the "Fach: chaften" dissected. If no other country in which you can e is ono impression that remains travel as far anq have as much fun hese interludes, it is that young on your nickel as in Germany. The 7
