Mar- ley of the Unitarian Church. Neafus was a battalion observer and political commissar attached to the MacKenzie-Papineau battalion of the International Brigade at the time of his capture, letters received by friends here indicate. Neafus' capture was reported in an Alcaniz dispatch by William P. Car- ney in last Wednesday's New York Times telling of the rebels taking an "entire Government brigade" at Cal- anda. It is known here that two other Michigan students, Robert Cummins, '37, and Elman Service, '39, were al- so attached to the MacKenzie-Papin- eau battalion,,Cummins as a runner and Service as a truck driver. Since they were not mentioned as being among the four Americans captured, conjectures are that they either were not at the front at the time or else escaped during the march into Al- caniz. Carney said: "Instead of conduct- ing them (the prisoners) to the rear, however, the Insurgents disarmed them and instructed them to follow Generalissimo Francisco Franco 's troops into Alcaniz . . some took advantage of the almost complete absence of vigilance by their captors and slipped away without their arms during the all-night march. They probably tried to reach their lines south of Calenda, but General Mi- guel Aranda's troops, advancing to- ward Alcaniz . . . were almost certain to catch up with these fugitives." Neafus' capture was discovered here yesterday morning when stu- dents, who had sent him a package containing chocolates and cigarettes through the Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in New York, re- ceived a letter referring them to the Carney story. A hectic se rchI through several editions of Wednes- day's Times brought no results until the Late City Edition was uncovered. Neafus graduated from the forestry school here June, 1936 after working his way through school almost en- tirely. He won his "M" on the wres- tling team. As a student he worked during the summer as CCC foreman on the Gla- cier National Park. After getting his degree, he went to the Nicolet Na- tional Forest in Wisconsin, where he held a job as permanent foreman for the National Forest Service, as- signed to a CCC camp.
