THURSDAY, FEB. 17, 1938 T HE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGS ......................... . ...... ............................. ... . .. . ... ................ ---- ----------- Track Team To Meet partans Tonight In Indoor Opener Varsity Picked To Take Meet; Faulkner Is Out Greer, Woodstra To Lead MI. S. C.; Schwarzkop f, Watson Seek -larks The Michigan track team took a lay-off from their practice grind yes- terday afternoon in preparation for their opener against the Michigan State Spartan tonight at the Field House. The entries posted by Coach Charlie Hoyt indicated that the Wolverines will throw their full strength into State in every event except the qua> ter mile and.sprint. Michigan will be' without the serv- ices of their ace 440 man, Ross Faulk- ner, due to an incomplete acquired in the recent finals when a recurrence of sinus prevented his taking a final. The depleted sprint forces go into ac- tion without Alan Smith. In every other department Michigan will play its full hand. Triple Duty Man Broken Field House recors in two events appear imminent, the shot and the two-mile run. Michigan's "One- man track team," Bill Watson. doing triple duty in the shot. sprint, and high jump, has bettered his own standard of 50 feet 1 inch consistent- ly, needing only a meet in which to make his efforts official. "The Galloping adematon" will flash his wares against Ken Waite, Spartan runner and former IC-4A cross country title holder. Waite will double in the two-mile and mile. The latter event should produce one of the bitterest races of the meet when Harold Davidson, Michigan jun- ior, goes out to wipe out his defeat at the hands of Waite last year. Waitej and Davidson ran second and third behind Clayton Bresford a year ago when he established the present Field House mark of 4:17.1 for the distance. Flashy Spartan speedster Wilbur Greer. will provide the invaders with the only five points on which they can depend in the 60-yard dash. His teammate, Harvey Woodstra, while a good bet in the hurdle&, will more than have his hands full with able Wolverine hurdlers Gedeon and Kel- ley. 440 Chances Good Only the fact that both teams are limited to two entries in the quarter saves the State forces from a shut-out in that event. If a revamped half- miler, Doug Hayes and Harvey Clarke, the two Hoyt entries, live up to their practice times they should have little trouble in heading State's Wright. Michigan has another pair of top- notch sophomores doing the chores in the 880 and high jump where Tom Jester and Wes Allen, both freshman record holders make their debut. Jes- ter collaborating with Bill Buchanan and Dye Hogan are strength enough to keep the 880 under control. Jimmie Kingsley, showing, vast im- provement over his last year's form, will renew his rivalry with Haberle of State. Haberle however, will find going easier against Michigan's soph- omore Dave Cushing than against the veteran Kingsley for whom 13 feet 6 inches is predicted tonight. 'ie meet will start at 7:00 p.m. with everything in the power of the oficials being done to ran the meet off without a hitch.
