Balloon Skirt Of Silkj Is WidelyAcclaimed Many New Models, Suggest Gibson Girl By KAY MAC IVOR Skirts and sweaters still get a, unamious vote as the ideal outfits for campus wear. Now the thing is to have as many different skirts as! possible instead of just the one which has been combined with a good many sweaters. Stores are bringing in a broad assortment of colors and styles in skirts whch are very tempting when we are in a "Springy" frame of mind. With so many different combinations possible, the new skirts encourage even the slightest flair for originality which you may have. "Balloon" Shirts Billow The "Balloon" skirt Is-the latest version with its new billowing fullness which is gathered in folds at the three inch waist band. The material, of fine quality of silk, allows the skirt to hang gracefully from the waist.1 The designer was evidently thinkingf back to the days of the "Gibson Girl" influence when he created this model. We had an immediate mental picture of a light chiffon shirtwaist with huge "mutton leg" sleeves above this "balloon" skirt. Stitched Pleats Are Practical Circularly pleated skirts are being shown in many more varied styles, and they are turning to more practi- cal and becoming lines. Now we don't need to be afraid of getting a style which will add inches to our figure. They have cleverly placed stitchings. and gores which are still fashionably full but absolutely not broadening. One type of gored skirt is similar to a sunburst. The stitch- ing is close together at the' top and ;radually widens as it nears the hem. Indications af a practical minded designer are those skirts which in- stead of having pressed pleats are stitched to keep the creases neat and unwrinkled after an all day's wearing. Dressmaker Style ~ By JEANNE FOSTER: The foundation sone of every woman's spring wardrobe, the suit, appears this year in combinations of stripes, plaids, or monotones. A black fitted suit seen in an Ann Arbor shop has a black and white triped coat with wide sleeves and a little turn over collar. The suit jacket buttons with silver buttons all thej way down the front and has a narrow! leather belt. Stripes Coverage Stripes are used in the skirt of a two-piece suit whose monotone jacket buttons tight across the chest and falls open at the waist. The sleeves are tight and the turn over collar, narrow. The jacket of another two- piece suit exploits converging stripes wkhile' its skirt is plain black and is, cut simply. Red Jabot Trims The jacket of another soft wool two-piece is cut with the broad and narrow stripes running horizontally instead of vertically. It falls open down the front and is caught to- gether with a buckle at the waist. The pleated skirt is a monotone. Navy also appears in a variety of striped/ combinations. One vertically I striped jacket has a stand-up collar, thin patent belt, no buttons and four 1 pockets cut with stripes running hor- izontally for trimming. A flashy red jobot and long striped coat complete the costume. Piping Is Used Another striped navy has the jacket piped with a wide stripe of self material, and another is trimmed with a wide band of stitching. Both have bright silk jabots and narrow leather belts. Plaids 'and checks come in for at- tention, also. These appear in both, the strictly tailored and dressmaker jackets and in both pleated and gored skirts. Plain color, or striped boleros are a jaunty variation of the typical spring suit. - MEXICAN SWAGGER IN BRIMS With peaked crowns or softly- rounded tops, the new Mexican som- breros appear in felts and light straws. Banded gaily in bright{ braidings, or leather trims, they may have fly-away scarfs at the back. Be your own severest critic, says the expert corsetiere. When you notice that suggestion of "tummy," be firm. Try a porous two- way stretch pantie. If that doesn't, work, a batiste girdle with panels of embroidered batiste and a baby zip- per, should do the trick. _ For the figure still less amenable to current lines, an all-in-one of knitted lastex offers a solution. Helen Jacobs, Designer Of Sport Togs, Scores Taking time off from the world of active sports, Helen Hull Jacobs this year designed some snappy sport togs for the modern athletic girl. Among the coats on display in many stores is a sport coat Miss Jacobs d, signed. It is beige in a style made for ease and comfort. The two big pleats in the back give the skirt fullness. A double-breasted front adds to its smartness. In the sports wear there is Miss Jacobs' choice of stock sweater which can be worn with shorts or slacks. 61 3 East Williams Street 4 doors off State Pie Plate and the smart Sailor. from 039 uP by HELEN"POLHEMJS!
