SUNDAY, MARCH 13, 1938 THE-MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE TWENTY-ONT ay Tweed Suits Contribute To spring Fashion-Rightnes& Wine, Purple Pink And Ble Are, CombIned Tailored English Charm Is Found In Collarless Jackets And Scarves By KAY MacIVOR The first day of spring is only seven days off, so right now the essential thing is to "suit" yourself in one of the gay becoming new outfits dis- played in the shops. The prominence of tweeds at Paris showins and chic resorts has deli- nitely confirmed their "fashion- rightness." Poly-colour will also share an important place tin the fashion spotlight, Even four colors are not considered too many. For instance, pink, blue, wine and purple have been successfully combined. This fad is sure to provoke any incinations to- wayd originality that we may have. Collarless Coats Appear Collarless lines appear on many of the suits, thereby contributing to the popularity of scraves. One outfit which has just arrived in a local dress shop has that English charm for which so many tailored suits strive all too unsuccessfully. The fingertip cape and dressmaker Suit are of a firm mannish tweed seldom found in women's clothes. The jacket of the suit is collarless and closes with brown buttons. . Pockets. Are Unusual One of the most frequently seen newer colors is yellow, or what they interchangeably call gold, maize and wheat stalk. In this shade one of the campus shops is showing a model with a tiny, round, stitched collar and half-moon pockets. A grey flannel suit also presentsT an attractive pic- ture in its unusual petal-shaped pock- ets. A red and white scarf and hankerchief add the final touch. Zipper-closed, jackets have also come in along with the March winds. They present a new neckline-high at the sides and back of neck-which formerly has been seen only in dresses. Lockspur Is New Hue Blue has been combined with all colors, one of the smartest combina- tions being blue and natural. A well- known fashion magazine emphasizes a larkspur blue as brilliant a the azure sky. In the same issue they feature a bolero suit of nubby blue wool. There are two pockets with two-inch flaps on the bolero and two pockets on the skirt. A two-piece suit with a conserva- tive brown, white and beige plaid skirt with pleats all around is topped by a plain beige "jigger" coat. An- other, which promises to be very good for campus wear, is also in beige. This one, of herringbone tweed, has a brown velveteen collar and the boxy shoulder line. ' i f f 1p -#9 7' Models For Street Show New Jligh Fronts; Sport Shoes Are Peasant Type By VALDA SPRING Gay, youthful, sopaisticated . . . the new spring shoes embody all of these things in just the right proportions. For street wear the newest shoes are designed to cling in such a manner that even with a moderately high heel ?or walking, the ankle remains sturd- ly held with little fear of a sudden lurch caused by insufficient support. Are ruilt High The smartest of the street shoes are 3uilt high along the front and lit- :rally sprinkled with perforations. One of these, in a vibrant Paprica -hade that gives a lift to any dark .resemble, is of smooth kid with the 3riss-crossed built-up front covered with perforations. Both toe and in- step are open and a metal buckle fast- ens the modified swing-strap at the side. The heel is not high, but is very sturdy for moderate walking. Gabardine in combination with patent leather is especially comfort- able and very springy looking. One is of navy gabardine accented with latent of the same shade. Very imple and dignified, this oxford is anightened with interwoven patent circles along the instep and across the toe. The patent heel is slender; but not high. Another in this same oxford has patent toe and heel stitched in outline. Opera Pump Good Perhaps the most flattering o all shoes for those with trim-looking ankles is an opera pump. A new pump model with a laced effect in front is made of hand-sewn lizard iii black or brown. This shoe is so ver- satile that it is a welcome asset to "ny well-rounded shoe wardrobe. Already limen is making its bid for popularity. One shoe combines darker kid with natural linen. The kid affects a criss-cross pattern up the front and lengthens and slen- derizes the foot. This model, too, fastens with a swing strap and the heel is of the dark kid.' Peasant Shoe Sturdy Other shoes, not so dressy, may be found in a low heeled front with a wide strap running through and, buckling at the side with a large metal buckle. The oxford is particu- larly cool, being made of rough linen with a sturdy felt composition sole, and comes in blue, natural, or dark brown. The other, which comes in a variety of colors, blue, tan, grey, white or black, may be obtained in either buck or calf. Sport shoes this spring are more rough and tumble looking than ever. Low heels, thick composition soles and comfort are the essentials, and any- thing goes if it successfully combines these three elements. Lanz, of Salzburg, has designed two out-doorsey looking peasant shoes. One is a square-toed, four-eyelet ox- ford in buff buck with a very flat heel and heavy sole. The tongue is rather feathery-looking and that, plus a long line that runs down the middle where the leather is reversed, makes this youthful and slenderizing. The Rib-RowEndsI Hose Problem New Iridescent Shades Are SpringFavorites Having trouble with the 'holey heel' problem? This season you need, no longer have qualms about suchl . things if you wear the new 'rib-row' heel featured by one of the better stocking manufacturers. These sha- dowy ribs not only give extra wear to your hose but they do not feel bul- ky on your heel-rather they tend to slenderize your ankles. The new spring colors still seem to favor iridescent shades for wear with the new iris and violet blues which will form at least a part (if your spring wardrobe. Rosy coppers, too, are good to accent beige and pas- tels, and a new warm beige is uot for the dark prints and subtle off-shades. Any one of these three colors is ver- satile enough to wear with white, navy, or black. Naturally, for daily campus wear, a woman demands not only plausiblei sheerness, but durability as well. For this kind of wear another manufac- turer has created a three-thread stocking that actually looks as sheer as evening hose yet, is strong enough to withstand the hard everyday wear to which on the average they are sub- jected. For evenings, of course, there are several lovely new shades that may be obtained in filmy two-thread hose. Among these is one of sunny beige that is a perfect complement to al- most any evening ensemble. Design Goes Nautical Lastex continues its popularity of last summer, the new suits coming in asattractive styles and colorful prints as those in other materials. One lastex suit is distinguished by a diagonal stripe of bright figures over a dark background. One rachel satin with lastex yarn goes nautical with dark brown sea shells printed on it.
