#. T I MIC IGAN-DAILY SUNDAY, MARCH 13,1938 In The Knew' I Forecasts Big Blouse Sell-Out Sheer Dainty Styles, Wild Prints, Fitted Vestees Are Fashion Advance By VALDA SPRING Since advance notes show that suits are going to be the thing again this spring, blouses, too, fol- low the upward trend. Sheer dainty lingerie blouses, wild print blouses, to say nothing of fitted vests and vestees, take the spotlight. Among the realm of lingerie blouses we find a predominance of fluffy-ruffly things. One, a daintily ribbed lacy model, has a tiny tailored bow at the neck, narrow turned over collar and cuffs and small pear but- tons down the front. Other lingerie blouses in organdy are also beruffled. One very plain one of white organdy has a six-inch-wide ruffle down the front edged in lace. Bow On Sheer Organdy Another of sheer white organdy is tied in back in a miniature bow rem- iniscent of a bib tie. The front is trimmed with vari-sized organdy leaves edged in lace, and the triang- lar cuffs on the sleeves are also edged with lace. The blouse is stitched from the waist up and five tiny pleats start at the waist for definition. On the new shorter-than-ever dresses are found, ofttimes, a white lingerie blouse showing only in front under a bolero top. Chanel also shows fitted vests under boleros. Schiaparelli's bust-length boleros are shown over high waisted skirts and white lingerie blouses, or more col- orful ones in subtle greyish shade of pink or green. Piquet strongly favors the skirt and blouse idea with tie-silk blouses of wild color with wide belts and plain skirts. Stripes In Lineup Even stripes take their place in the blouse lineup. Navy blue and white striped cottons are ideally cool to wear with that mannish tailored grey suit, and wild contrasts are the rule rather than the monotone ac- cessories of a few years back. Such things as cerise dottde blouses with navy blue are. very smart, and the lquder the prin,. the better. For evening wear, too, blouses are in. A heavily-ruffled organdy blouse tops a black chiffon skirt for dinner. Piquet again shows jersey dresses topped with blouse-like jackets for evening. A black tiered tulle skirt is shown . by Mainboucher under a snowy white lingerie blouse with fichu Not only white and solid col- ors, but stripes, as well, are shown for evning wear plus one very new note: knitted tunics or boleros. White knitted tunics appear over vivid re dskrts, or a red knitted bo- lero tops a blac skirt. Simple Sweaters Will Compftement New Spring Suits that college classic, the sweater, will be more important than ever this Spring a sa complement to the newest skirts with their swing styles and gaudy plaids. With the exception of the Tyrolean style, the latest sweaters are cut along simple tailored lines with their style value lying in their lovely colorings and the fine quality of their yarns, rather than in the intricacy of their design. An appropriate topping to a color- ful skirt is the plain white sweater, either long-sleeved or short, of coat or slip-on style. Stylists show a strik- ing one in a simple basket weave with two long panels of ribbing that start from the waist band and end in nar- row ribbed pockets. Sweaters substituted for blouses make a country of the city suit, and add lovely color interest when chosen in high pastels. Fine sweaters with a hand-knit look may be found in soft tones. The principle thing is to purchase one you won't tire of quick- ly . . . nothing flashy, extreme nor, poorly made, but individual, up to date and smartly fashioned. Set-fn-Belt Seen Campus shops cater more and more to the tastes of the college student, 'One shows a sample of those stud dresses which have gained .yso much popularity recently. This version of the style favorite has a set-in-belt, a circular pleated skirt and square pockets set at angles in the blouse. Jackets are very good and are pre- sented in a variety of ways. The jacket dress seen in one shop has its most attractive features in the flo- man stripe blouse of twill. The sleeveless vest has royal blue covered buttons and button holes down the front. The "Gaucho" dress is a new name for the Gibson Girl style . . volum- inous chiffon blouse, rhinestone but-i toned, over dark silk skirt. More on the summer side, but wearable in a short time, is the heavy quality of sharkskin. The style is plain to a point of severity ... form fitting and] beltless. The collar, however, is what makes this frock. It has brilliant blue and red felt hearts and flowers appliqued° on the collar. White Pique Trims Navy blue is still a favorite and white lingerie touches perk up the simplest of gowns. The model has an inch of pique pleating all the waydown the front onreach side of arow of white covered buttons. A dress with white daisies on a blue crepe field is full skirted and full bloused, and an aqua crepe bolero dress with drawn work is equally at- tractive. Some of the high points of fashions are the sleeves which are all curves, loose blouses, the new "high water" mark of boleros over frocks of clipped fronts and draped waists, skirts with hip yokes and the two parallel waist lines-one high and one low-with a gathered yoke. White Stripes Wool Lelong has usei a zebra effect in a crepe dress with a bodice crossed in front and tied in back. Creed uses narrow white stripes on the skirt of his dressy black wool dress. When .you say spring, you imme- diately think 'of color. A.brilliant print is given an ideal background, and contrast by black,. navy. or any other dark shade. Canary-yellow over black creates a mild sensation, espe- cially when the print'is a moidernistic. pattern. Pink dots woven into a black taffeta worn with pink suede accessories will have the same effect. Designers have used. all their in- genuity in fashioning prints. In one they have used the figure eight, l placed at different angles,'to which. they add a cluster of African daisies at the neckline and cap sleeve gath- ered fully. VEIL FOR CONTRAST An interesting hat is one with a veil in a contrasting color which is drawn over it and ties under the chin, giving a .quaint old-fashioned effect. Then there is an adorable little off-the-face bonnet with a wisp of a veil floating from behind. ! TRENDS! Spring flowers blossom on New Easter bonnets. Styles Feature Bolero By HELENE RUMIZEN Advance style notes reveal that boleros, capes and scarves of soft, luxurious furs are destined to be a fashion highlight this season. This new shoulder silhouette is bound to add an aristocratic elegance to the simplest of costumes. Silver Fox Leads Distinctive silver foxes are still predominating as the leader in true fur beauty. The silver fox cape is more popular than ever, as it lenas j a sophisticated, flattering touch to any outfit. Sables, Baum Martens, Kolinsky and Moleskins, too, are be- ing "used a great deal in the new spring fur pieces. Sable Scarves Rich The standard fur scarf, to be thrown casually across one's shoul- ders, is to maintain its popularity this season as it has in those past. There are many new variations, however, in the styles of the fur neckpieces, depending greatly upon the type of skin used and upon individual tastes. Rich, brown sable scarves may be composed of from two to six skins in one neckpiece, depending upon which number the woman prefers to wear. The sable skins may be twisted, turned, or knotted in many original ways. Onenstunningsilver fox scarf is made in double tiers of skins, coming low in the back and clasped to an- other horizontal tier which falls low, elbow length. Sleeves Are Varied Small bolero jackets of different kinds of fur promise to become the most popular of fur styles. For af- ternoon wear, boleros with short, el- bow-length sleeves, some puffed and emphasizing the broad-shouldered effect, will be worn. Among the ma- terials used are moleskins, foxes, er- mine and mink. One good-looking jacket is made of broadtail, is fitted, has loose rag- line sleeves and features a zipper up the front. Another is of ermine. It has the skins going vertically down the front and horizontally across the back and sleeves. A silver 'fox bolero shows the skies running vertically down the front and back 'and hori- zontally on the sleeves. HOSE BLENDS WELL Looking to an important shoe and leather season, new spring hosiery comes forth in sparkling colors that have an undertone of softness to blend with the costume colors. Many new, "sunny" hues, including tan and coppery tones, as well as the more usual bieges, are smart with dark costumes.
