He opened the set-up plays for Townsend's pass- ing by the use of a blocking offense as the guards broke through the free throw lane. Although he has tried to get his boys to do this for weeks the strategy worked for the first time last night. Huffman Cheered Huffman and Ken Gunning, the Hoosier captains, were unable to stem the tide of Michigan baskets, Huffman played his heart out but the best he could do was three bas- kets as Townsend went around him time after time for points. Near the end of the game the great Hoosier athlete, voted the Conference's out- standing gridder and member of the 1936 all-Big Ten cage team, was called on his fourth personal and left the floor amid a storm of ap- plause from a partisan crowd that recognized a superior athlete. The Indiana offense was useless as the Varsity stopped it cold. True the Bloomington boys couldn't stop their shots, but the Wolverine defense was so tight that Indiana seldom got a clean attempt. Michigan Goes Wild For the first half Michigan seemed to .be laboring under its usual mental handicap that always shows up when the Varsity plays either Purdue or Indiana. Still the Wolverines were working errorlessly and the ultimate result was inevitable. The half end- ed with score 23 to 17 in their favor as they dropped nine out of 10 free throws. In the second half, however, Michi- gan ran wild, scoring almost at will. Dean substitutedufreely but the only man .that he could get to work was Jim Birr, former Indanapolis high school star and an old opponent of Big Ten Standings W. L. Pet. Michigan's Varsity track team, po- tentially one of the strongest in Wol- verine history and the early favoriteE to win the Big Ten indoor title next month for a fourth straight year, opens its schedule Saturday night in a dual meet with Michigan State at Yost Field House. The Wolverine thinclads apparent- ly emerged from the battle with the eligibility bugaboo in excellent shape. The exact status of the members of the team will be learned Wednesday night when the eligibility committee of the Board in Control of Athletics meets at the Administration Build- ing. Panthers Are Strong The meet with the Spartans will be the first of threehome indoor meets, Ohio State and Pittsburgh being scheduled for the next two successive Saturdays. The Spartans face Michigan Normal Wednesday in their first meet of the year and not until then will local observers know defi- nitely the strength of the State ag- gregation. However, it is known that the Spar- tans possess at least one great dis- tance runner in Ken Waite, IC-4A cross countryechampion, and the competition between him and the Michigan distance stars snould pro- duce some excellent times. Michigan Is Favored Sammy Stoller, just back from Bos- ton where he captured the Briggs In- vitational 50-yard dash Saturday night, may also have a job in beat- ing out sophomore Wilbur Greer of the Spartans in the 60. Although Greer has not yet run in collegiate competition he is reported to be the fastest sprinter Michigan State has had in several years. Michigan will be an overwhelming favorite to capture the meet but Spartan stars may come through un- expectedly to take a number of firsts. However, on the basis of formertac- complishments and this year's time trials such men as Capt. Bob Osgood, Stoller, Stan Birleson, and Howard Davidson should be certain winners.
