PAGE TWEEVTTHE MICHIGAN DAILY 1 aried Activities Are Planned For Summer Social Program At. FRiAY, MAY 14, 1937 League THE SPORTING LADY Gag= B THREE BLIND MIC With-summer just around the corner as the sun reaches hotter and hotter levels, the thought of summer school comes to mind-And what to do about cooling off at such a time.. The physical education staff has already considered that angle and has any number of suggestions to make life one happy picnic for the would be student at that time ... And we mean picnic here fig- uratively as well as literally for the department or- ganizes picnic swims for get-acquainted purposes on occasional Friday afternoons during the session . - And for those wishing more strenuous exercise, thec department promises to sponsor tournaments in anyi sport where there is enough demand to make it wortht while .Or perhaps your interests lie along the realms of "boots, saddle, tot horse and away" as Mr. Tennyson phrased it . . . And in that case there'll be riding all summer-both for instructional and recreational purposes ... The popular Sunday morning breakfast rides will be continued as will thes Thursday supper rides . . . there have also been rumors of more of thek moonlight rides being continued throughout the summer months.. If You Can't Sing It, Swing It ... And after a few lessons in golf at the W.A.A. Building-and somek practice on its famous putting green and Palmer Field, you'll be able toE swing around the expanses of the University Golf Course with the best of them . . . And there'll be instructors at Palmer Field to help you] master any stroke you're having trouble mastering, and bring you down into the seventies.... If you feel any William Tell tendencies coming on, there are both inside and outside facilities at Palmer Field to practice on before you aim at your unhappy victim . . . And last but not least, a great deal of any necessary sports equipment will be furnished by the department . . . what you aren't furnished free of charge, you can rent for a very small fee at the W.A.A. Building . - . To Trip The Light Fantastic.... Modern dance enthusiasts will have quite a time, it's predicted, asa Katherine Manning, who is Doris Humphrey's assistant at present, will, be giving courses here this summer . . . And I mean the Doris Humphrey of the Humphrey-Weidman concert dance group of course . . But if your tendencies lie more along Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers lines, there'll be tap dancing instruction to keep you right up with the best of them . . . Both mixed and women's classes are scheduled throughout the week ... Then the 12 clay and four cement tennis courts on Palmer Field are open all summer to bring out the Helen Wills in you . . . These courts, which are incidentally, 0 reputed to be the most popular- in the city, will have the same privileges during the summer session as at present . . . And if you concentrate on your drive or take any of the courses given, there's always the city-wide tennis tournament later in the season to plan on .. Suggestions On Cooling Of f.. . As the mercury gets higher and higher and the sun shines brighter and brighter, "ye olde swimming poole" becomes more and more popular . . And with good reason, as its one sure way of cooling off . .. So there'll be lots of classes given for beginners and a few for the more advanced . . And if you're not quite so aquatically minded, canoeing rates next to swimming as the most popular sport of the season . ... In fact, there's even been some talk of canoe trips for those advanced in the art being spon- sored by the department during the summer . . . Bicycling, roller skating and walking have greater and greater pos- sibilities as the summer wears on . . . All three are good ways to start the picnic treasure hunts and weenie "busts" that increase / so many innovations along the bicycle line including a new motor-driven vehicle that you can't help finding one you like . . . For example, there's the ingo-bike to work off any excess poundage you may have acquired during the lazy June months . . . Or the tandem bike if you want to make it a twosome . . . And there's talk about having electric lights on some of the bicycles so riding ,n the evening hours will become safer ... And with that, we'll leave you speculating on the joys of summer and its possibilities Suppers, Bridge Lessons, organizations to mix together and be- their annual tea and reception early 'friends and making new acquaint- supervision of Miss McCormick, who Watermelon Cut T e a come acquainted in the short period in the season at the League.
