_ THE M1C1_GAN DAILY Trackmen To Clash With Galloping Hoosiers Thinclads Will Strive To Hold Record Intact Watson Slated To Do One Man Track Team Act; Meet BeginsAt 1:45 By ROY HEATH Fur will fly on Ferry Field this afternoon as Coach Billy Hayes' "Galloping Hoosiers" featuring Dur- able Don Liash tie into Coach Charlie Hoyt's track crew, lately dubbed "America's greatest dual meet track team." The Indiana boys, fresh from mak- ing an afternoon's workout of such track get-togethers as the Kansas and Penn Relays, will encounter a somewhat different situation this af- ternoon when they attempt to make four brilliant distance men a match for a powerful, well balanced Mich- igan team which has not forgotten a pair of beatings handed them last year by bad breaks and this same out- fit. Bresford On The Spot Just what Michigan can do to snitch a few points from Lash, Deck- ard and Smith, Inc., rests squarely on the shoulders of Clayton Brelsford and spunky sophomore, Harold Da- vidson who surprised his veteran teammate two weeks ago at Berkeley, California as he nosed him out in the one-mile run. Should Brelsford stay with, or in front of the pack instead of hanging coyly back and de- pending on a phenomenal sprint to carry him home a winner, the Maize and Blue will fool the Hoosiers who count on a clean sweep in the mile and two-mile events. "Singin' Sammie" Stoller is good enough for anybody's money in the century -sprint. For second place it, is a toss-up between Indiana'sflashyE Bob Collier and Alan Smith, Mich- igan's stolid sophomore sprint star. This same pair will fight it out in1 the 220 with a slight edge going to Collier who is credited with 21.5 for the distance plus a big margin in experience. Trutt Carries Hoosier Hopes In the 880-yard run the Hoosiers, depend upon Mel Trutt, a foot racer" of no mean ability, to bring them home another five points. On the' other hand there is no reason to be-' lieve that Howdie Davidson won't' trim the stocky Indiana boy. Failing this, Trutt will still have able half- milers Bennie Starr and Ed Devine to reckon with. This afternoon may see Big Bill Watson consumnate his scheme to ring up twenty points in an afternoon., Michigan's number one weight man will try his hand in four events, the' shot, discus, broad jump, and high' jump. Watson looks like a cinch in the shot and discus and has a better than even chance for first money in the broad and high jump. The wide range of Watson's activities demands that he start work 15 minutes before his teammates. He will begin tossing the shot at 1:45 and the meet poper will start at 2:00 o'clock. Hurdles To Osgood Captain Bob Osgood should shoot a double in the high and low hurdles with a possible threat from Indiana's Jack Neeley in the high sticks. Steve. Mason is another Michigan posibility in the 220 lows. He has been inches back of Osgood in every low hurdle race this year. Hoosier hopes are dim indeed in' the 440 with Stan Birleson doing the honors for the Wolverines backed up' by Chuck Miller who is a greatly- improved runner. Despite this Mal- colm Hicks will still be a big factor for the Hayes forces in the quarter mile proceedings. Relay Team Crippled Things lack their usual rosey hue for the Wolverine one-mile relay team. Neither Osgood nor Mason will' be able to run a, leg due to the fact that the 220 low hurdles is slated immediately preceding the relay event. Sophomore Harvey Clarke has1 been experiencing leg trouble for the past two weeks and may or may not be in shape to give a good account of himself. However with Birleson and Miller sure to carry the stick the Michigan boys can't be counted out. Michigan's Dave Hunn should ex-1 perience little difficulty in the up- and-over event. Hunn has consis- tently been over 13 feet while Shoe- maker for the Hoosiers claims 12 feet 6 inches as his best effort.
