Hopkins Picked To Talk At Phi Kappa Phi Dinner Prof. Clark Hopkins of the Latin and Greek departments has been se- lected as the chief speaker for the Phi Kappa Phi initiation banquet, Prof. R. S. Swinton.of the College of Engineering, secretary of the hon- orary society for senior and graduate students, announced last night. Professor Hopkins recently re- turned from the University excava- tions in Silencia and has chosen them as his topic. Professor Swinton said. Members of the five-man commit- tee are Alderman Harold Zulz, chair- man, and Alderman Charles Eaton, Frank W. Staffan, C. E. Griffen and Glenn Alt. The council refused to accept a schedule of rates presented by rep- resentatives of the Washtenaw Gas Co. at the council meeting Monday until they had time for a thorough investigation. .The committee is ex- pected to be able to finish its study in about 10 days. Ann Abor's police radio system has been put into operation! Saturday, S. S. Sturgeon, police radio operator, started station W8XJQ working, and for the present the communication system will op- erate on a one-way basis, with scout cars receiving messages only. How-' ever, as soon as possible the pro- posed two-way equipment will be put into effect. To make possible the sending of messages, a temporary antenna has been set up in city hall. After a trial period of 10 days, local police will make application to the federal com-4 munications commission for a final license to operate the station. Regular police messages are beingI sent during this trial period, and the{ department is checking on .the ef- fectiveness of the equipment, Mr.1 Sturgeon said. A community drive was sponsored from November to February by the Junior Chamber of Commerce to raise money for the costs of equip- ment and construction.
