Galaxy Of Bright-Hued, Matching
Handbags Forecast Arrival Of Spring
Evening Dresses Are Exotic
With Bizarre And Vivid Colors
Fresh out of packing boxes and
dotting counters in most of Ann Ar-
bor shops are those new spring hand-
bags, already forecasting that a good
deal of that bit of color which is so
necessary this spring will be tucked
under your arm. They come in
suedes, patent leathers, pigskin, calf
or gabardines. Suedes are undoubt-
edly the most prevalent and rival the
patent leather for bright hues.
Smart-minded campus women plan
to have a bag to match each major
outfit they possess. Bring out the
contrasting color! This spring it will
be easy, for a galaxy of new and
different colors appears on the scene.
There will be cauldron blue, red
earth, California orange, a whole
series of reds and blues and a host of
greens.
Plenty Of Room
More complete make-up equip-
nent will be carried in bags this
spring and they are designed, in most
cases, especially with this fact in
mind. One bag in pigskin is built
like a minute traveling bag with a
little handle. When it's opened it
looks like a square box and nothing
in the purse can hide away in any
corners, It's all there for you to
see. The side of the purse is hinged
to hold it open as long as you want.
A tiny fob tied to the handle will
notify people that the bag is yours in
true traveler's style. Bags with the
labels and appearance of an inter-
esting trip to Europe are procurable
for those who delight in novelty.
Another cavernous bag (as many
are) contains a make up kit inside
of it besides a space to pack away a
dress or a pair of shoes for an over-
night trip. And the old favorite, the
vanity box. has returned.
Fancy Suede Pouches
Suede pouches, draped and stitched
to within an inch of their life, are
forecast to enjoy a great popularity
with suits and dresses. With your
suit you may prefer the more tail-
ored bag, but with a new print you
want a flamboyant pouch. One shop
shows them in oval shapes with a
large button as a fastener. This same
shop features a beige imitation leath-
er bag with a design of flowers
stamped all over its surface. This is
designed to be most effective with,
black. Quilting and stitching do a
great deal towards giving these
pouches an individual air. These are
in all colors.
The 'bag that Queen Victoria car-
ried was a bit weighty in its rich
brocade or heavy velvet but this year
it enjoys a reincarnation in softer
leathers. You will like these. old
'saques,' complete even to the cord
or drawstring at the top. They are
roomy aid easy to carry.
Bags Made To Match
Paisley linen and heavier ma-
terials form very smart bags. They
match everything you will wear and
step a bit from the ordinary theory
that purses should be made of leath-
er. Gabardine in black, blue or
brown are made up in flatter purses.
The general trend is toward the
large practical bag which will open
in suitcase fashion. Envelope styles
have been redecorated with hidden
pockets and compartments non-de-
tectable under new soft lines. One
bag adds to its attraction with a
small lock and key, by which you can
create an illusion that your bag con-
tains much more of value than the
lonesome dime lost in its roomy in-
terior.

Cimderella was never gowned so
beautifully for the King's Ball, as
the modern sophisticates will be this
spring at the round of campus formal
dances. These new evening dresses
seem to enfold the gay and exotic
mood into their very stitches. Dis-
carding their heavy winter material;
of brocades, sequins, and velvets,
these new formals come forth in pom-
padour taffeta, chiffons, nets, crepes.
and laces.
Raintbows Featured
We are greeted with the whole
spectrum of colors running this
way and that, in plaids, stripes, or
prints that are vivid and bizarre. One
.rainbow" dress has flounces that
deepen in color to the last wide
band of turquoise. Another style has
a pinwheel of colors mounted on the
end of a black crepe shaft. Tri-
color sashes are extremely popular,
and are especially lovely on a smoky
gray chiffon.
A pale green chiffon evening dress
is shown with a trailing sash of
flame and acid-green. Color also
reigns supreme in a mousseline dress
striped with prismatic colors. A
multi-colored plaid slip brightens a
navy marquisette frock and makes it
a grand success. White crepe is fash-
ioned in the form of an obelisk that
has hieroglyphic bands around the
whole formal.
Thank You, Greeks
Once more we are grateful to the
Greeks for the bountiful inheritance
they have bequeathed to us. Strange
as it may sound, Dame Fashion has
now chosen their pillars for her in-
spiration, to model gowns of un-
usual stateliness and grace. One of
these styles is made of flame-red jer-
sey that hangs perfectly straight
when first put on, but by swirling it
around yourself and girdling it with
gold it becomes a spiralled pillar.1
Another of the Greek formals has a
sheath of dragee-blue crepe with
pink ribbons tying at the neckline.
Over this is worn a bolero made of
black Chantilly lace that is em-E
broidered with black silk motifs.
Thus with much shirring and drape-
ing, the modern miss takes on the
appearance of a Greek maiden.
Ankles Show
Several of the dresses in the new
showings are but ankle-length. One
of these styles was created in multi-
colored taffeta that gives a typical
ballerina silhouette. An imported
crepe evening gown has the new wide
hemline that is stiffened with crin-
oline. On some models of gaily
flowered poplin the skirts are gath-
ered enormously full with a black
velveteen bodice that fits snugly.
It is almost impossible to find a
place to stop in an article on spring
formals. There are so many wonder-
ful new styles that will just have to
be skipped over without even so much
is a mention, but as the spring ad-
vances you will get glimpses of them
peeping out of the store windows,
and just see if you can resist their
)eauty and femininity.

are definitely waist length and close
fitting. Skirts are exclusively full

Evening wraps are long and come
in regal velvets of all shades. With
puffed sleeves, fitted waist lines and
graceful flowing lines from the waist

For summer stylists predict the

The flattering three - quarter

the three-piece suit. Of military
style it emphasizes the severe tail-

Watch That Waistline !
Experts Warn Women
Be your own severest critic, says
the expert corsetiere.
When you notice that suigestion of
"tummy," be firm. Try a porous two-
way stretch pantie. If that doesn't
work, a' batiste girdle with panels of
embroidered batiste and a baby zip-
per, should do the trick.
For the figure still less amenable
to current lines, an all-in-one of
knitted lastex' offers a solution.

IS NOOSE NEXT?
Brilliant coral, assorted shells, and
huge bobbing corks will be hung and
wound around bare neck, arms, and
ankles at California's beaches this
summer.
Artificial posies which are worn
at the neck or waist of a dress and
on lapels of coat or suit are found
in all sizes and colors. Sprightly
white daisies with yellow centers and
paper-white hyacinths, bright but-
tercups and huge red, pink and white
ca-nations are but a few which add
a b±:;ht touch of spring to new cos-
tumes.
Buds and full-blown blossoms
perch precariously at all angles on
the newest bzats.
Small bouquets to be worn in the
hair add the bright touch when they
carry out the colors of the new prints.
WATCH FOR JIGGER
The true jigger coat-and there is a
true jigger type which is often con-
fused with the ordinary short boy-
shouldered coat-is shown by many
stores in white, black and the vivid
coronation colors for spring. The jig-
ger is a short coat of sfinger-tip
length, with a broadened shoulder.
