Two Afternoon Frocks Of Lace And Crepe
Checks And Plaids In Tile
With Beige, Navy With
Red, New Combinations
Box-Coats Are Smart
By VIRGINIA VOORiEES
They're tops, these new topcoats
for women. Scotland and England,
those connoisseurs in the field of
sportswear, have once again brought
forth winners-stunning handwoven
tweeds tailored in the style of the
draped back, the raglan shoulder, and
the balmacaan collar.
What's more, attractive color com-
binations are offered in plaids-the
window-pane plaid, particularly, and
in checks large and small-namely,
the district check and the hounds-
tooth or shepherd's check. We find
bright green with white, tile with
beige and with the darker tans, dark
blues contrasted with lighter shades
of the same color or with deep reds.
Herringbones are, likewise, among
the selection, as well as are solid
colors. In the latter category falls
a beautiful spring-weight camels'
hair in the natural shade.
Are Practical
Smart beyond measure, they are
just as practical. Technically speak-
ing, they are cravenetted--which, to
less versed fashion followers, means
that they are waterproof. They
won't shrink, they will hold off fine
rain, and, as the colors are all taken
from natural vegetable dyes, they
are fast-colors.
A further talking-point-which, of
course, is applicable to all tweeds-is
that they are cool as well as warm.
Paradoxical as this may seem, it is
true, for if the wearer's body is warm
the coat will feel cool (and remain
so); in colder weather the coat will
affor'd complete protection against
such stinging winds as it is an Ann
Arborite's lot to expect Also, addi-
tional warmth may be secured by
placing buttons on the inside-six on
each side and three on the collar-
to which a woolen lining may be
easily fastened.
Sleeves Are Pleated
From topcoats to box-coats seems
quite a distance, but time changeth
much and, , this year, box-coats-
often called jigger coats-are top-
coats. These are short, some waist
length models even being shown
under the pseudonym of topcoats.
These feature front fullness with
much detail in the way of pleats,
gores, and slits in the back. It is in-
teresting to note that the neck and
shoulders are the points of concen-
tration, for pockets-lots of them-
are placed very high, sleeves are
pleated at the top from where they
fall loosely, double-breasted, fitted
models sport a number of buttons all
located above the waist and nearer
the neck. Unpressed revers which
are very small stand out pertly from
the smartest creations.
These jigger coats, like the longer
tweed topcoats, come in plaids and
in plain colors. Along the former
line, a combination, of tan, dark
brown, black, green, and red isex-
tremely unusual, while the plain
coats are shown in new shades such
as melon and thistle as well as in the
more familiar colors.

Dress Patterns
If it's fit to print its printed! Prac-
tically everything is sed as a source
of design in the new spring fabrics.
Silks display widely-spaced flow-
ered prints on either light or dark
backgrounds. Small geometric de-
signs are plentiful. Motifs of weather
vanes, hunting scenes depicting the
chase and the like in light colors on
dark grounds.
Country scenes, and nautical sym-
bols are represented in colorful cot -
Lons. One gay print represents as-
1cirted sizes of elephants around nu-
merous palm trees. Another shows
barnyard scenes with roosters, milk-
maids and farmers.
Wide wale pique displays colorful
flowers in large designs. Rough or
smooth fabrics have light and dark
prints on contrasting backgrounds.
The Oriental and Javanese influ-
ence is found in the design and color
of many of the new spring prints.
Woolens are generally smooth in
texture and both light and heavy
in weight. A few wool crepes are
tufted in the same or contrasting
colors. Tweeds are lighter and
brighter in tones; some of the Brit-
ish overplaids mix three and four
colors. Coronation colors are found
in all types of weight; beige, how-
ever, is tops in all materials.
For formal wear the new sheers
have multicolored prints. Where it
was almost prohibitive to have more
than three colors in a print a few
years ago, it is now possible to buy
highly colored, and many-figured
material for a nominal sum.

Magw Of Fashions;
I's Ihis Yiear's Scarf
Grab yorself an awning, tie it
around your neck, and you'll have
the makings of this season's scarfs.
Stripes of any size, Roman, Grecian,
or regimental, of any hue and com-
bination, make a riotous showing.
For the most part they are three-
cornered, the colors almost always in
combinations.
An amazing one seen recently, con-
sisted of two triangles, one, of the
new hyacinth blue, and the other of
a bright kelly green, tied together in
the back. The scarf with all its
boldness was worn with an Elizabeth-
an blue sweater. Other color com-
binations in similar scarfs were em
erald green and electric blue, orange,
and a deep wine red which was stun-
ning on a deep purple sweater.
Scarf designs have been saluting
Persia for their origins, also. A four
cornered one of canary yellow bore
bright red, blue and green designs,
and was tied loosely arond the neck
of a black sweater. These four-
cornered scarfs are even trickier than
they seem at first glance, as they
may be worn as belts or hats. Using
them as the former is very chic these
days - try it to liven up a sweater
set instead of the conventional patent
leather. As a bonnet for milady's
curls they prove very popular for
windy or rainy days.
-Most people have a dangerous
habit of "sticking their necks out."
It may be dangerous, but according to
spring styles it's very smart.
Evening Coats Show
Fitted, Box Lines
Two silhouettes date evening
coats as Spring 1937-the square-
box line and the princess.
Of the two the square-box, quilted
royal blue, white, or black velvet
capes, 'is the newer. Finger-tip
length and padded shoulders that
stand up in a straight, severe line
are their best points. Frog fasteners
give the tailored front-closing a mili-
tary air.
The princess silhouette is seen in
a quilted tafetta, full-length coat
that comes in black, white and all the
primary colors. The coat has "extra-
large" leg-of-mutton sleeves and a
wide stand-upcollarthat frames the
face. It comes in a three-quarters
as well as full-length style.

Simply Tailored
Suits
Authorities On Shoe Trends Say
Gabardine Is Season's Best Bet
Vivid colorings and typical Persian
designs give many of the new scarfs
a fashion flair that's needed to dress
up the simply tailored suit costume.
Severe necklines, women have found,
are not too flattering, so the bright
printed scarfs are welcome accessor-
ies.
Squares or long Ascot scarfs are
favored, worn in soft draped effect,
or as typical Ascot ties with the ends
tucked into the waistcoat of the suit.
Coat necklines are also softened by
these scarfs, especially since the tail-
ored yet feminine princess "reefer"
coat is a spring favorite.

Authorities on shoe trends these
days are saying "gabardine" with
every other breath, and almost the
only mention they give to anything
else is when it is combined with gab-
ardine.
Patent is favored for these com-
binations for its shine in contrast
to the duller material. Stores have
an exhaustive selection of gabardine
alone and in combination in spring
styles, showing it in gray, blue, black,
and brown and in all heel-heights.
Trim the styles with "high throats"
and flattering strap models are using
gabardine for its practical qualities
as well as its smart appearance.
Other materials are playing minor
leads in the shoe scene and deserve
attention. Suede is no longer re-
stricted to fall and winter footwear
and is being shown in models that
are undeniably for spring. Stores
ar e showing beige and gray suede,
particularly in a wide variety of new
shoe styles. A warm beige suede,
combined with reddish-brown kid,
is being featured in a well-cut model
with a medium heel. Gray suede is
also suggested for street wear, and
is seen in several strap models, typi-
cally with a wide front-section reach-
ing to the ankle.
Crepe soles for sport wear find
generous representation oi the cam-
pus. It's never too early for white
in strictly sport styles, and brown-
and-white is so far running a close
second to all white.
The greatest influx of white in
dressier models never comes until
after Easter, the "official" beginning
of the summer season.
