THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUN1DAY, MARCH 14, 1931 Smart Women Desire Casual Day Costumes British Mode Adopted By America; New Clothes Tailored And Sporty Because we're going definitely "British" by daytime, the smart wom- an will want at least one "casual" costume which she can motor in, travel in, or knock-about in generally all day long. It's a British fashion, the stores tell us, but America has softened it an'd made it much more flattering and wearable. Perhaps it grew out of the sports mode, launched by American women for the whole world, but this new casual mode is surely here to stay. It takes in the whole group of semi- tailored suits, semi-swagger coats, semi-sports frocks. It's neither sporty nor tailored, yet the casual clothes are so styled that they may be worn for either. Frocks Recomme'nded In soft woolens, and woven silks, or plainer prints, the casual frocks of this spring are recommended for many daytime occasions. Shirtmaker in feeling, or two-piece, they borrow just enough of the feminine or dressy touch to be flattering, they have little collars, often plain sleeves, and are almost always belted, and trimmed with cordings, tuckings, slight gath- ers or dashing touches of embroidery bands of color. The new shorter length of sports and swagger coats is also applied to the casual coats. But these are fre- gently belted. In the %tht length, however, they are more practical, or even full length. Some of them are unbelted and have semi-swagger full- ness, or straight box lines. Others are semi-fitted, with a hint of the princess line to make them a bit dressier. Woolens Popular Casual woolens, in the hairy sur- face basket-weaves, soft fleeces, che- viots, or even the new twills, are chosen for these all-round coats. And the colors are usually neutral so that they go with the costumes. Beige is arfavorite, but gray, navy and black are also seen. With so much attention given to the classic tailleur for spring, stores tells us the smart woman is shopping about for "something different," and finding her "extra" suit in casual styling. They may combine coat and dress, or coat and skirt. Three-piece models are also seen. Again, the styling is neither sporty nor tailored, and when chosen in one of the softer woolens such a suit may be "dressed up" so that it is appropriate for Sun- day or afternoon wear in town. Sep- arate furs, especially colorful new cross-foxes and red-foxes, are worn with this suit. A few models will be found with soft fox or wolf collars of their own. Skirts Are Straighter Skirts are along the straighter lines whether softly gored, or made in more tailored fashion. Pockets add a decorative touch, and leather belts may brighten up the entire costume. In fact, a dash of color in accessories is often used to dress up the casual suit, whether it be a printed blouse, or a bright patent leather bag and a gay little felt hat. Tliree- Pie~-e Suits Enhan~fce Wa rdrobe Brilliant Formal Evening Wraps Created. To Repla e Dark Velvet s .._._ .. ..w.____.. .T __ __ The weather may be hot-the wea-, ther may be cold-but whatever the1 temperature, it's still March and we're well into the Spring season as far as clothes are concerned. It's time for molting-get rid of that wintry dark velvet covering that you've been wearing of evenings, and emerge a brilliant creation of pastel color in one of the new wraps that are starting to come into the local. shops. If you're a conservative in clothes and are afraid of rushing the season, you may be glad to know that furless velvet wraps are still being shown and can be worn for some time yet -but if you're buying a new wrap, you'll want one made of the new materials and colors. Wrap Falls To Knees A pink silk bengaline wrap is about knee length. It is double breasted and fastens with two white buttons. The attractive feature about this model is that it can be, worn as an afternoon coat as well as an evening wrap. Another coat made in the same style is of white duvetyn. It has rather full shoulders, and hangs loosely. It, too, is double breasted, and closes with buttons. A flat collar finishes the neckline. A wrap that would be especially enjoyable when the evenings become quite warm, is a waist-length cape of brocaded white satin. It buttons at the throat under a flat collar. Designed To Match Fashion designers have made many a wrap to match the particular for- mal with which it is to be worn. One of these is made of thin black jersey. It is to be worn over a green and yellow chiffon dress and is lined with the chiffon of the dress. A startling floor length wrap is made in three huge sections-one blue, one yellow, one red. Another double-duty coat-the kind that can be used for afternoon wear as well as evening-is made of white gabardine. It has a small black collar and black buttons down the front. Women Should Choose Hose With Great Care, Women are becoming more and more leg conscious. Hose should be selected as care- fully as shades of rouge or lipstick with emphasis on matching natural swing tones, and selecting the ap- propriate weight of stockings for in my opinion the appearance of any woman can be improved 80 per cent by correct choice of shade and weight in hosiery. Mixed Tweeds Good Choice The more practical neutral or mixed tweeds are an excellent choice, but many women are choosing mono- tone woolens in twill weaves, we are told at the stores. In untrimmed models stitchings add interest, pock- ets and buttons in odd shapes and sizes give new details, and sleeves which are fairly wide are chosen to be worn over suits or sweaters as well as dresses. In most cases, the casual wardrobe finds its "pep" treatment in the use of a bright touch of color in acces- sories. The very femininetacces- sories are not usually worn with this blouses in plain dark colors and sweaters with a definite blouse styl- ing are always appropriate.
