PAGE EIGHT 0 THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, MARCH 14, 193'7 Woman May Choose Her Spring Suit To Fit Personality Or O rcas ion Material, Line, Accessories All, Adjust To Need Fashions Will Fit Wants Of Young, Older Women For CityOrCountry Definite 1937 Style With the suit established as the fashion pet of 1937, smart women need only decide what kind of suit to wear, for there are many new ver- sions, to supplement the classic tail- leur every woman must have for gen- eral daytime wear. "Riding coat" suits, with youthful flaring peplums at the back and beautifully moulded bustlines, squared shoulders, and swinging skirts, suggest themselves to the woman who adores being feminine. These are aristocratic looking when chosen in smooth woolens, such as duvetyn or suede-surfaces or broad- cloth. They are extremely smart in all black. Suits Slenderize Longer-coat suits, with tunics, are especially good looking for the older woman, and have the slenderizing lines she prefers. Plain sleeves, cas- ual fitted lines may also be found in this suit, making it adaptable for general daytime or travel wear. It is noted in twills and other service- able woolens, and has the same smart look as the riding-coat suits. Bolero jacket suits with colorful blouses showing are . liked by the younger fashion clientele. However, many bolero treatments are worn smartly by older women because they have a slenderizing effect. Suit Is Inde~pensable The woman who already owns this indispensable tailored suit costume will arm herself with a set of fem- inine frivolities in ruffly white neck- wear, boutonnieres for her lapel, gay scarfs, and other feminine fancies. She will,' of course, also have a set of trimly tailored accessories, includ- ing waistcoat, Ascot scarf, plain doe- skin or pigskin gloves and handbag. And for variety, she will change her personality with a gay print blouse and other harmonizing color acces- sories. For travel or country wear, the Very mannish suit is chosen, made of typical men's-wear fabrics, in stripes or small checks. And if the woman wants to go "internationale" in her smart get-up, she will choose a Brit- ish suit, in mannish or casual tailored styling, made in nubby tweed or cheviot. The new woolens are soft, so that they give a casual and more flattering effect, rather than ex- tremely mannish lines in these suits. Pockets Are High Nipped-in waistlines, slightly exag- gerated shoulder lines, and little flar- ing peplums, give a feminine look to many of the new suits. These have the high-peaked lapels, and often single or link-button closing which is more flattering to the figure. Pock- ets are placed high, also getting away from the strictly mannish styling of classic suits. Twills, gabardines and soft cheviots or basket-weave woolens are used in these suits, so that they may be trim or more casual in appearance., And accessories may be chosen to accent this effect, with frilly jabots and dainty embroidered blouses or more casual sweaters or shirtwaists carry- ing out the theme. Furs Utilized Three-piece suits, the season's fa- vorite for practical purposes, com- bine the tailored suit with tailored topcoat, or the more casual suit with swagger or semi-fitted coat. Fox col- lars, soft lynx or wolf fur give these casual costumes special practicality for town or country and make them ideal for travel wear. Long-coat suits, with short con- trasting jackets underneath, are an- other version of the town-country en- semble. These may be in reefer styl- ing, single or double-breasted with wide lapels, or the typical princess line buttoning straight up to the neckline where a gayly-colored scarf is tied. Cape-suits swing in the spring fa- shion parade, selected by women who like their casual styling. Capes this year hang free from the shoulders in almost severely straight lines. They fall to the fingertips or to just above the knees. Shorter fox-trimmed capes are high fashion and dressy. enough to go to afternoon functions. Foxes Are Worn Separate foxes are the smart thing. to wear with the spring suit. Silver for scarfs, in one and two-skin lengths bring glamor to any suit; while for color effect, the red fox or cross fox is a smart choice and may* be worn with black, brown or navy. Stoles, revived from Grandma's day, are noted with extremely chic suit costumes, in stone martens or' even sables. Capes, short and with a fashion flair all their own, are again high fashion. Capes of silver fox, cross fox, or the many flat furs, will _.. _ _ Velvet Collar Is New This Season Frilly Ruffles, Gilets Decreed Tyrolian and Dirndl Found On Campus Tunic-Length Jacket Boih the dirndl and Tyrolean in-I For Neckwear fluences may be seen on the dresses on campus. Paris fashions show a dress in Pervanche blue crepe, with a short, attached bolero jacket that has a dyed lingerie trim. The neckline of the dress itself is gathered. Huge, splotchy flowers in vivid shades cover the black background of a chiffon frock that has yards and yards of "swing" skirt. A black velvet bow ties beneath the Peter' Pan collar and long streamers of the velvet extend from the bow to the hem of the dress. Black velvet is also used for the belt. The gown is dressy enough to wear to any informal affair. There are prints galore in any shop's collection of afternoon dresses, mcst of which either have jackets with them or short woolen swagger or redingotes over them. The usefulness of a silly print of small red and white flowers on a navy blue background is doubled when it is ensembled with a navy blue fine woolen swagger coat. and lace trimmed neckwear that gives a frothy whiteness about the throat, in striking contrast to the dark spring suit. High necklines con-E tinue for neckwear and gilets worn with suits, although many new V- necks are also seen with frilly jabots and ruffles.j Shirts Are Smart With beige and gray suits, dark neckwear is often preferred, in black linen, ruffled organdie or sheers. Plain shirts are especially smart in dark colors, worn with a brilliant brooch instead of a tie, and giving a neat appearance to the semi-tailored suit. Dark shirts are often topped with striking white waistcoats or vests of white pique or linen, a fash- ion which became famous in southern resorts this year. A matching white bow tie is used to set off the dark shirt collar. Dark lace or net, too, gives the right touch to the light suit, and may be chosen in high, frilly or tailored neckwear. Crepe or satin may be' worn with other suits, and is very practical as well as smart. Navy, with gray suits; black with beige suits; or brown with either gray or beige, is fashion's color formula. For those who dare to be different, Cor- onation red or blue or a tawny yel- low gives color contrast to the suit. Scarfs Are Prominent Borrowing from Dalmatia and the Tyrol, or from our own American Indians, or even Old Mexico, we find new embroidered trimmings on neck- wear for street suits or sports en- sembles. Gala color combinations on whiteor .beige blouses give a live- ly accent to the neckline. Scarfs, too, find a prominent place' in neckwear fashions for suits. Per- sian scarfs, bright Scottish plaids, peasant prints, and modernistic de- signs-all in a lively assortment of colors-are worn in kerchiefs or long Ascot scarfs, and tucked neatly into the front of waist coat or jacket. While white or dark neckwear is the rule for spring, another method. of achieving smartness is by blend- ing the color of neckwear and suit. Thus, beige suits with a fleck of brown in the tweed, are often worn with brown neckwear combining these two colors. The monotone ensemble, which promises to become smarter this year, gives many in- teresting chances for color blending. Capes are the smartest thing for dressed-up college students. A cape ensemble makes a very practical outfit for off-campus purposes. A simple beige wool dress with in- tr icate applique braid at the neck is a very suitable garment to be worn. under a matching finger tip length cape. This tunic is a change from the many shorter jackets to be worn this spring. Its lines are flattering to almost every figure. i I MARILY SHOPPE-- y_ i It's the Loveliest Tile of the Year at 'Our Store ! Everything Is So New and So Lovely and Colorful!
