Prexy Directs Choice Two Varsity stars and another former Wolverine performer were named on the All-American swim- ming team announced yesterday by George W. Graves, Michigan A.A.U. president and chairman of a com- mittee which directed the selection of the team. Co-Capt. Jack Kasley was named as a member of the 300-meter med- ley relay trio as the fastest breast- stroke swimmer over 100 meters,' sophomore Tom Haynie was placed on the 800-meter free-style relay quartet and Dick Degener, Olympic titleholder and former National Col- legiate champion under Coach Matt Mann, was named number-one div- er off the three-meter or high board. I Medica Most Popular Jack Medica, Ralph Flanagan and Peter Fick captured the largest num-1 ber of places on the team. Medica, of the Washington A.C. at Seattle, was named by the 23 swim- ming coaches and officials partici- pating in the selection, for five places on the team and received the highest number of votes. Fick, of the New York A.C., was picked for four events-100 yards and 100 meters free style, 300 meters medley relay and 400 yard relay team, while Flanagan, of the Great- er Miami, Fla., A.C., was named for the 880, one mile, and 880 yards. Other members winning places in the selections follow: John Higgins, of the Olneyville Boys Club, Providence, R. I., 200 yards breastroke and 300 meters in- dividual; medley, and Adolph Kiefer, Lake Shore A.C., Chicago, 150 meter backstroke and member of 300 me- ters relay. Highland Named Others on the 400 yards free style relay team are Arthur Highland, Lake Shore A.C., Chicago; Arthur Lindegren, Los Angeles A.C.; and Charles Hutter, of Harvard Univer- sity. John Macionis of Yale University was named in the 880 yards free style relay group. In the diving division: Al Greene, Lake Shore A.C., Chicago, 1 meter (low) springboard, and Marshall Wayne, Miami, Fla., Biltmore A.C., 10 meter (tower) platform diving. Puckmen To Meet Ontario Aggie Six On Tuesday evening next, Coach Eddie Lowrey's compact little hockey machine will play hosts to the team from the Ontario Agricultural Col- lege. O.A.C. plays hockey in a fast league that includes municipal teams from Galt, Guelph, Kitchener and Ham- ilton, and the brand of shinny they serve up will be right up with the best. In the last meeting of the two clubs, the Wolverines were victorious to the tune of 5 'to 3, but the re- ports indicate that they are not to be taken lightly. Lenny Wilkes, a newcomer to the O.A.C. ranks who established some- thing of an outstanding reputation playing football for the college this fall, is understood to be' the spark plug of the outfit. Another Great Minnesota Team LARRY ARMSTRONG, Minnesota coach, says the Gophers will be stronger than ever on the gridiron next fall . . . The star of the team, the temperamental mentor says, will be an unnamed fullback "who is better today than Herb Joesting or Stan Kostka ever were" .. . Joesting and Kostka will be remembered as two of the best in a long line of great Minnesota line plungers . . . Freshman track records are being gradually lowered through the years, Coach Ken Doherty's bulletin board charts reveal . . . Ken feels that some of the records are due to stay, but quite a few will be lowered still more.I Michigan's basketball team has engaged in three overtime battles this; season-and has won all three . . . Two were against the University of; Washington in Seattle Christmas vacation, and the third with Chicago last Monday . . . Cappy's five will not have to worry about Fred Fechtman, huge Indiana center, in its two games with the Hoosiers next semester ... Fechtman is through as a college player under the Big Ten's eight-semester' rule ... He finished his career in grand style against Ohio State last Monday -scoring ten points . . . A striking parallel is found between Fechtman and Capt. Johnny Gee of the Varsity . . . Both are six feet nine inches in height and neither played basketball in high school. No Pro Ball For Pat S X-CAPT. MATT PATANELLI, All-Conference end, says that he will not play professional football under any circumstances ... Pat has been sent a "feeler" letter by the Pittsburgh Pirate club of the National Professional League ... Fullback Cedric Sweet is entering the Golden Gloves boxing tour- nament as a heavyweight . . . Cedric has been complaining about lack o: exercise since the football season ended ... If drive and power make a boxer, Sweet's opponents are in for some bad sessions . . . Have you noticed the way Gib James, ace junior wing, walks around in any and all weather wearing only a jacket? The hockey team was given a rousing sendoff yesterday yesterday morn- ing . . . All of two people were at the station at train time-one reporter and one rink rat . . . Assistant Coach Bennie Oosterbaan, the Big Ten's leading scorer during the middle twenties, still plunks them in with unerring ac- curacy from all parts of the Field House floor . . . I take exception to the statement in The Daily Illini that says IIlinois "still has the fastest white man in the Big Ten in Bobby Grieve" ... I say Sam Stoller's record is much better. . . Any bets on the result when the two meet next time? During this two-game series, Maki will act as captain besides plugging up the net mouth. The elected Captain, 'Moon' Mullins has been forced from the game for an indefinite period due to an operation resulting from a back injury.1 Voights Wins Berth Northwestern's veteran Wildcat five had to make a regular berth for Bob Voights, a guard, who doubles on the gridiron as a tackle. Activities will take place as usual in the Yost Field House. The Ohio aggregation, coached by Thor Olson, former world's middle- weight champion, will send seven sophomores and one junior against the up-and-coming Wolverines. All promising, the inexperience of Ol- son's forces, is expected to provide, too much of a handicap against the Varsity grapplers. Injuries alone may beat Mich- igan. Paul Cameron, Frank Morgan, and Butch Jordan are all on tlr "question mark" list, and the ability of their replacements may well deter- mine the outcome of the meet. Ed Kellman, Dick Tasch and Lil- burn Ochs will be the probable re- placements for these men in that order; only Kellman hasndone any wrestling this year. Captain Frank Bissell and Harland Danner, senior and sophomore re- spectively, lead the Varsity point scorers this year with perfect totals. Each has engaged in four tilts and has emerged victorious by a fall in every bout. Bissell is enjoying the most suc- cessful season in his wrestling career. The veteran 155-pounder has dis- played brilliant form all year and is counted on to top the class of the Big Ten when they gather here in March. Danner has been the surprise and sensation of the season. An obscurej sophomore two months ago, Harland was fighting hard for a Varsity berth. Today he is among the mainstays of the squad and has served notice that he will go far in this, his first year of competition. Unassuming, modest, but extremely aggressive within the ring, Danner combines all the best requisites of a collegiate wrestler. He is fast, strong, and willing to mix. All of his bouts this year have been crammed with action, and this may well be account- ed to the "go-get-'em" attitude of this young star. At present Bissell and Danner have amassed twenty points each in Var- sity competition. A fall, for those un- familiar with the mat game, is count- ed as five points for the victor; a decision as three points, and a draw as one-and-a-half points for each competitor. THE STANDINGS: McCarthy Feared Downtown, N McCarthy, the centeronsthe first The Al line has established himself very S clearly in the minds of the Wolver-_ ines that played against him last year, for he matches Heyliger with his poke checking, and is a remark- able playmaker besides. While not the high scorer of the squad, Mc-- Carthy's name is the one found most often in the 'assist' column of the summaries. Coach Lowrey took the same nine men to Houghton that faced Minne- sota here last week-end, and in ad- dition, Bill Chase, in the capacity ofI alternate goalie. The squad is in the best of condition and the minute they find their bearings in the P strange ice house, they should be 106 East able to take up where they left off last Saturday evening. A brief peek into the records re- veals that the Wolverine pepper line FLORIS of James, Heyliger and Fabello hasE scored all but four of the 32 count- ers that have been gathered in to date. Of these, Captain Heyliger is --- credited with 14 goals, James with READ THE 11, and Johnny Fabello with 3. 11 .. -i 'landers for lowers Let that dependable college pal, Railway Express, pick up and ship your laundry home and back for you every week.
