This advice is particularly felici- tous in Ann Arbor, because evening clothes are worn quite extensively here and the popularity of tailcoats makes it necessary to buy wisely for they are more expensive than dinner jackets and worn less frequently and for this reason have a longer period of use. Velvet Colors Outmoded The above illustration shows a representative evening gathering. The first gentleman is in a smart four button, double-breasted, dark blue, knee length, Chesterfield. The coat, as do all smart Chesterfields this season, carries a cloth and not a velvet collar. The second figure is in a double-breasted dinner jacket hav- ing ribbed silk peak lapels. He wears a turn-over collar and a black bat wing tie. The ,third masculine figure is in a single-breasted, fly front Ches- terfield with a cloth collar. The coat is quite short and very smartly proportioned. The next figure is in an evening raglan coat with a mili- tary collar. Just below the collar are ribbed silk facings. It has a fly front and is very smart with a tailcoat. The man with a glass of champagne is wearing the correct new tailcoat with properly proportioned lapels. With it he wears a bold wing collar and white semi-butterfly tie. Observe his waistcoat which is single-breasted but which has neither points nor lapels. Alongside of him is an older gentleman in a single-breasted peak lapel dinner jacket having satin fac- ings, an innovation this year. With it he wears a bola wing collar and black semi-butterfly tie. Two Ties Shown Evening mufflers may be of white knitted silk, or, as illustrated below, white crepe silk. The muffler shown here has a tassel fringe and carries a three initial monogram in dark blue. This type of hat is far more durable than the silk hat, and as it is very smart, it has won favor throughout the country. Hombergs Permissable As an alternative to the opera or silk hat, the black homburg is per- missable with the dinner jacket. Both the homburg and the collapsible opera hats are available in the mid- night blue shade to match midnight blue dinner jackets and tailcoats. Midnight blue has long since passed from the ranks of the novel and is now countenanced in the high- est fashion circles. 1 -Copyright 1936, -Copyright 1936, Esquire, Inc. Esquire, Inc.
