Fortification A g a i n s t Rain, Sun, Cold Hand Knits Favored Fur Coats Should Provide Ample Insurance Against Cold Winds By BARBARA LOVELL Only a few more days are left be- fore the first football game with its attendant bands, cheers and milling crowds,. occurs. To enjoy the game in comfort is largely a matter of careful dressing and if one's plans include a tea or celebration of some sort afterwards, the selection of clothes becomes doubly important. Since the first game is usually played in ridiculously warm weather, it is well to choose a smartly simple wool or knitted dress to be worn with your knockabout camel hair coat, which, incidentally, you will probably shed before the half. The two-piece knits with a handmade appearance are better than ever this year. A classic model which is beau- tifully tailored but not too severe comes in a variety of colors. The wool has a rough look but the effect is softened by ties at the neck and waist and such dressmaker details as tucks and a row of tiny buttons down the front of the blouse. Feathers Woven In Wool The new princess silhouette is exemplified in a well-cut dress of a new wool which boasts ostrich fea- thers in the weave to make it look light and warm. A little bolero jacket fits under the flattering Directoire collar. A shirtwaist style of the same material is novelized by gathered shoulders, tiny covered buttons and a velvet ascot plunged into the high neck, Camel hair, the season's favorite coat fabric, comes in beautiful glow- ing colors such as soft green, a nice subdued dubonnet and'a lovely warm rich toast which pleads to be teamed with the yellow of chrysanthemums. If you choose a tweed coat and skirt your coat will probably be a fitted reefer style. As for hats, one of the primary factors to be considered is whether or not your choice will blow off at a crucial moment and whether you will -be compelled to clutch it at every gust of wind throughout the game. A securely fitting felt pork- pie with a softly upturned brim and a tiny gay feather in its band is more (Continued on Page 22) Knit Your Own'IsTheme Song As Co-Eds Rush For New Yarn Brilliant Autumn Colors Popular For That First Knitted Suit By DOROTHEA STAEBLER The continued popularity of knitted, dresses makes it possible to achieve variety and color in the college ward- robe. At the beginning of the school year, knits will be worn for all occasions. There is nothing more popular or suitable for the classroom than sweat- ers and skirts or all-knit dresses. All the yarn companies have re- cently issued their fall styles. It is evident that the chic new styles will insure the stay of hand-knits. Bright shades for fall, dark ones for winter and pastels for spring complete the year's wardrobe. The military trend is reflected in a hand-knit dress of a dark color. The whole outfit is donee in stocking- net stitch. The jacket is bordered with a contrasting stitch and zips up the front. Four frogs of a contrasting color add the finishing touch to the outfit. Knitted Suits Popular Knitted suits vie with those of tweeds in style and line. One made entirely on diagonal lines has a con- trasting blouse and a jacket with diagonal ribs throughout. A coat style made with a narrow ridge and sport kick pleats, has a wide leather belt and wooden buttons. A bright1 scarf and handkerchief add a bit of color. Pleats are proving as popular in knits as in woolens. A shirtwaist dress with action pleats in front and back has a yolk and collar of a dif- ferent stitch. Leather buttons and belt of a harmonizing color may be worn. The newest knit coat has all the latest fashion details. Swing back, large sleeves and tailored collar are all included in its style. Belts And Bows Featured Looking ahead, a short-sieeved dress for early spring is jauntily set off with a huge bow tied through equally huge bone rings. A wide suede belt matches the bow and sets off the dress which has a tricky ribbing in both skirt and blouse. A nubby yarn dress has a diagonal cut to the blouse. The collar and sleeves are bordered in a bright color with a matching belt. For the am- bitious knitter a coat also accom- panies the demure dress. A two-piece dress with a ribbed panel down the front of the skirt has a jacket made with the ribs. The raglan sleeves and belt are of a dif- ferent color and a scarf which pulls through a bone ring matches the' sleeves. Sweaters are a great help in a col- Contradicting Styles Seen In Hats For Fall Contractions seem to be the key- note for fall's latest creations in hats. High crowns, flat crowns, brims chopped off in front, back or side, berets which may be worn anyway, turbans and off-the-face hats in a deluge of delightful colors confront the prospective buyer. Newest among these is the high crown which is flattering and a bit breath-taking. Possibilities with these hats are endless. Creases and peaks appear with ribbons, feathers and veils. Tailored ensembles are best suited to the mannish hats which dip over the eye. With a double-breasted two- piece suit, a wide-brimmed medium- high hat has a contrasting band, and a crease similar to a man's hat. To go with a coat of tweed with wide reveres, a modified postillion hal which dips front and back has a matching hat band. Fashion has taken comfort intc consideration as well as height. On a high-crowned hat, the brim juts out in front, but becomes a mere noth- ing in back, lying fiat against thC head. A large fur collar will not push this hat out of place. Also for comfort, one can find small turbans which are easy to dance in. I Proves 1lattering For New Coiffures' New and different coiffures have a perennial attraction for the beauty- conscious woman. She likes to ex- periment with them in the hope of improving her appearance. But no elaborate hairdress can flatter if the hair itself is not in good condition. A sweater with that classic crew neck is an excellent start for beginners. Many companies advertise making the skirts for a small sum if the buyer secures enough yarn for both the sweater and skirt. This should be a great boon to those who imagine a whole outfit to be an endless job. You can now purchase yarn that is very similar to that used in Brooks sweaters. The price of these may be prohibitive but it is cut in half if you make it yourself. At- tention this season is centered on smooth flowing lines, so a part all the way back, with a roll from temples to ears would win favor. For evening wear, tiny ostrich feathers and narrow ribbons held back with jewelled clips would mnake even last year's coiffure look original. Flowers, both fresh and artificial, add to the loveliness of formal toil- ettes. On the adventurous soul pos- sessing raven tresses, lacquered curls might be striking. However, it would be the very exceptional woman who could carry this off effectively. In all hair arrangments one should strive for neatness, for straggling locks are the foe of any attempt, no matter how elaborate.
