'Agony Al' Is Back To replace Warmbein, Coach Bach- man has "Agony Al" Agett, triple- threat artist deluxe. Agett was more of a star than Warmbein last sea- son, but usually was kept on the sidelines until opportune moments for his talents arose. This year he is ready to assume a starting role. Usif Haney, from Agett's home town of Kingsport, Tenn., and Gene Cielek of Michigan City, Ind., are two bruising sophomores with worlds of speed who will supplant Agett and put some weight in the Spartan back- field., With the "misery" apparently de- parted from his back, galloping Steve Sebo will cavort at right half again for the third season and be on hand with his accurate place kicks. Zie- gel may break in as Sebo's under- study. The fullback post will be handled as it has been for the past two sea- sons by the astounding Art Brand- statter, Ecorse bruiser, with big Kurt Kuhne of Pontiac again his substi- tute. Pingle Looks Good Another figure wholooks as though he. may break into the backfield at some point isJohnny Pingle, triple- threat sophomore who found West Point too much for'him after a year as ca freshman' at State in 1934-35. The absence of Lou Zarza and Bob Allman from the end positions may seem forboding at first glance, but three reserves of last season and two sophomore huskies are working Pre-season recapitulations of Michigan swimming prospects this year.have it that the loss of two Na- tional Collegiate championship divers+ will not be felt n the least. Qualified observers of Coach Matt Mann's team can see nothing but easy vic- tories in both the Big Ten and Na- tional Collegiate meets, the fourth in the latter event and the eighth in 11 years. Last season the Varsity dropped the Big Ten :meet for the first time in six years to Iowa, 39-37, after de- feating the Hawkeyes in a thrilling dual meet. In the Nationals at Yale the Wolverines came back to score 30 points to 21 for Iowa and 17 for the highly-publicized, indifferently per- forming Yale team, champions of the East. Four stellar divers who took eight in nicely under the expert tutelage of assistant coach] Tom King. Milt Lenhardt and Hank Kutchins are running signals with the first eleven after two years on the bench, but young Frank Gaines, Lansing junior. may oust one of the two be- fore the season starts. Tackle Posts Intact The tackle posts are intact from last season with Howard Zindel and Julius Sleder on hand for the third year running. Sid Wagner, named on many All- American elevens last year, has grad- uated and joined the Detroit Lions, but his running mate as guard,.Gor- don Dahlgren, is back and already is being ballyhooed for All-American honors. Tom Gortat, sophomore re- serve last season, will probably move Into Wagner's position, with Mike Polimac and Walt Leuck close behind. After fretting on" the bench for two years, Vince Vanderburg is ready to man the center slot many thought he should have taken away from Sam Buzolitz last season. Sam Ketchman, Battle Creek senior, and made over fullback Paul Beaubien may put Van- ierburg on the bench for a thirde year. places on the Collegiates helped the Wolverines no end last season and but one, Ben Grady, is returning. Ex- Capt. Frank Fehsenfeld and Derland Johnston, N.C.A.A., high and low- board champions have graduated along with Ned Diefendorf. Leading the team this season are Co-Captains Jack Kasley and Frank Barnard. Kasley is, world record holder in the breast-stroke and Bar- nard is Big Ten 440-yard free-style champion. Barnard To Sprint Barnard will probably move to the sprint relay this season and leave the distances to a pair of Detroit sopho- mores, Tom Haynie, National A.A.U. 220-yard champion, and Dave Holmes. Ed Kent, a versatile per- former who is at home with the breast and back-strokes as well as the free-style, will also see action over the longer grinds. For the first time in many years Coach Mann will have a power- house in the sprint free-style events. Bob Mowerson, anchorman on the Collegiate championship medley trio of Kasley, Harry Rieke and Mow- erson, will probably be the only short- distance man of last season to hold a regular place this year, although Paul Keeler and Irwin McCarty may see some action. Dearth Of Sprinters Sprinters coming up who are due to collect some Conference and Na- tional titles are Leo Tomski, Bill Farnsworth, and Ed Kirar and Baker Bryant, ranking stars late of Wiscon- sin and Ohio State respectively. Fred Cody, second in the Big Ten and third in the Nationals two years ago, has regained his eligibility, and will be in the back-stroke with Rieke, who reached the final Olympic trials this summer. Fred Robinson may surprise here. In the diving Grady will be assist- ed by Adie Fernstenfeld, reserve last year, and sophomore Jerry New- house.
