Dr. Revelli attributed the modern band popularity to the fact that the band can serve the community in1 many ways. During the depression, Dr. Revelli declared, when the coun- try needed spirited music to help the nation keep its chin up-the band came in for much use. According to Dr. Revelli, the most popular instruments were formerly the cornets and the clarinets, but their popularity in the last two years has given way to the balance of the other instruments because of the manner in which all instruments are featured today. Not only is the band a drill team today, Dr. Revelli said, but music by Wagner which features the woods and brasses, compositions of Deems Taylor, Stravinsky, Grofe, De Rose, Gershwin, Hadley, Victor Herbert and Hansen have proven that a band can exist as a medium for good music. "The band has won the respect of the people. Sousa's band was the only traveling musical organization of any kind able to make national tours year after year at a profit. This was because Sousa knew that the band was versatile and could not only convey the classical, but also could add spice in the way of novel- ties. This is a final reason for pop- ularity," Dr. Revelli concluded. Classiied Directory LOST:; CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING! Place advertisements with Classified Advertising Department. Phone 2-1214.
