THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1936 I r Keynote Of W omen's Summer Styles Burton Tower Is N ow Under Construction Students Deeide Classics School Summer Course All Who Intend To Enroll Should Tell Instructors Their Preferencesf The curricula in classical Ian-S guages, literatures and archaeologyj will be arranged this summer, as far as it is possible, in accordance with the wishes of prospective students, the departments of Greek and Latin have announced. For this reason all who expect to attend the Summer Session are urged to enroll, inform- ally, by letter to the instructors con- cerned, at an early date. The courses offered by the depart- ment of Greek will be directed to- ward three ends: first-to provide a rapid introduction to the language, for those who have had no previous instruction in it; second-to provide general courses (not requiring a knowledge of the Greek language) in certain phases of Greek life and thought; third-to provide courses of I graduate rank for students who are candidates for the higher degrees. The courses given by the depart- ment of Latin wil be of three types: undergraduate work in translation and composition, introductory and advanced courses in archaeology, and graduate courses adapted to candidates for either of the higher degrees. A special course in the teaching of Latin in the secondary schools, pro- viding opportunity for observation in the demonstration school will be given by Professor Dunham. In connection with the work in Latin use will be made of the Uni- versity collections of classical anti- quities and of reproductions of ob- jects of ancient art in the Museum of Classical Archaeology. The col- lections incude Greek and Latin manuscripts, and papyri, Latin in- scriptions, Greek and Roman vases, Roman lamps and Greek and Roman coins. These materials will be avail- able for advanced students. Work in classical archaeology will be offered jointly by the Greek and Latin departments both to students who have no knowledge of Latin or Greek and to those who have enough preparation in the languages to take more specialized courses. Lantern slides, photographs, squeezes, and casts will be used for illustrations. A special course in Greek litera- ture inl Engish, which will include a study of literature from Homer to Demosthenes, will be offered as part of the plan to provide work in the classics for students without a knowledge of either language.
