P'AGE TWOTlEM ii( N iAL UESDAY, MARCH 17, 1930 ... _ 1 1 t 3 Faculty Men Take Part In Sunday Forum Maurer, Dorr, McFarlan Speak On New Deal At Weekly Discussion Although they agreed that the New Deal is not a movement to the Left - at least "very far" to the Left - the three University professors and one local attorney who took part in a round-table discussion at the last meeting of the Ann Arbor Community Forum, held Sunday in Perry School Auditorium, were far less in accord as to what course the United States should and may follow. Expressing confidence that a "so- cially responsible" capitalism can be attained through the enactment of ameliorative legislation embodying effective government support of or- ganized labor, higher taxes on sur- pluses, inheritances, and incomes, and encouragement of public owner- ship of utilities, Prof. Wesley H. Maurer of the journalism depart-. ment, said he doubts that the New Deal will move very far toward such* "palliative" measures. Prof. H. J. McFarlan of the engi- neering college is equally certain, he stated, that the capitalistic interests will not submit passively to the loss of their power which such laws must necessitate. "Capitalism and the United States," he said, "have come to the parting of the ways, and the inevitable alternative is some form of collectivized production." Prof. H. M. Dorr, of the political science department, who acted as chairman of the round-table, sug- gested that "if the New Deal had been advised in its early days to make a gesture to the Left while capitalism was further entrenching itself behind this mask," its subsequent actions could be harmonized move for move with such hypothetical counsel. Chapter House ire amages Total_$10,000 Insurance adjusters are expected to arrive today at a final estimate of the damages caused by fire which broke out early Sunday morning in the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, 1315 Hill St. Willard Walbridge, '36. president of the house, tentatively set the damages at approximately $10,000. Twenty-two members of the fra- ternity were forced to find temporary living quarters in other houses as re- pairs began yesterday. Floors in the living room and the hall were chop- ped through in order that firemen might get at the blaze which was in the furnace room. Walbridge said that the entire heating unit may have to be replaced. All the furniture on the first floor was ruined by the fire, water and smoke, which penetrated the entire house. Rugs suffered the greatest damage, while clothes and personal effects of the members living on the second floor were not considered damaged to a very great extent. ENDS TONIGHT GEO.
