AGE s THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUt4ANARY Steam Boiler Described IBy UniverSity Men Experiments Carried On By Konz, Brown, Ullock Related In Magazine A description of a modified steam boiler which is markedly more ef ficient than those now in use wa given by several University faculty members before the November meet- ing of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the magazine "Chemical and Metallurgical Engi- neering" reports in its last issue. The basis for the modifications is the use of a new liquid having ther-- mal characteristics differing from those of water in place of water in th boiler. This liquid, Dowtherm A. allows the horsepower per unit of fuel used by the boiler to be in- creased; and also lessens installation costs when its use is planned for. In the experimental studies which Prof. G. G. Brown of the chemical engineering department and G. A Gaffert, P. H. Konz and D. S. Ul- lock, research fellows, reported on, it was found that best results were obtained when the Dowtherm A wa placed in an intermediary stage be- tween the fire and steam boiler. A summary of the effect upon heat transfer properties of a steam film when the steam contained certain small proportions of air was present- ed at the Institute meeting by Prof. W. L. Badger of the chemical engin- eering department together with S. J. Meisenburg and R. M. Boarts. In general, they found, the existing Nusselt equation holds true as the expression of the heat transfer co- efficient, but a modified constant must be used and a term added for the air concentration. Professor Badger, in conjunction with Jesse Coates, also presented a paper upon the effect of viscosity on heat transfer in forced circulation evaporators. Freshman Glee Club To Meet Tomorrow Members of the Freshman Glee Club will give an entertainment at their weekly meeting at 4:30 p.m. to- morrow in the music room of the Union, it was announced by Shirell aKsle, '37, who is in charge of the freshman group. The entertainment will climax the first semester activities of the fresh- man group which, in the opinion of Professor David Mattern of the Music School and director of the Varsity Glee Club, is the best Freshman Glee Club in years. It was urged that former mem- bers of the club who have dropped out attend this meeting. They are welcome to resume their affiliation with the group. Will Show Pictures Of Federal Airways Five reels of motion pictures on "Safety on the Federal Skyways," sent to the University by the Bu- reau of Air Commerce of the Depart- ment of Commerce, will be presented by the Aero Club at 7:30 p.m. tomor- row in Natural Science Auditorium. Accompanying explanations to the pictures will be given by Burdei L. Springer of the aeronautical engi-- neering department, through whose efforts the pictures were obtained. The meeting will be open to the gen- eral public. Included in the pictures will be shots of a typical flight made by a modern air liner over a Federal air- way, of preliminary work necessary to the establishment of a new airway and of a completed field, together with the equipment of such a field.
